Consultancy services – ToR- Human Centered Design Deep discovery and engagement session with staff at Food for the Hungry- Kenya (FHK)

  1. Context

Changing human behavior is challenging. Human-centered design (HCD), an approach to problem solving that prioritizes empathy, counters these challenges by actively engaging end users, providers and other stakeholders throughout the development process. HCD incorporates an understanding of the motivations and incentives that drive human behavior, including cultural and social norms, into designing solutions that are aligned with the end-user and offer lasting impacts. Embracing HCD means believing that all problems, even the seemingly intractable ones like poverty, gender equality, and clean water, are solvable. Moreover, it means acknowledging that the people who face those problems every day are the ones who hold the key to their answer (IDEO, Design kit, 2015).

  1. Background

FHK is currently in the process of piloting and deriving lessons on Food for the Hungry’s (FH’s) new program model. The intent statement of the new program model is: We build resilience that enables children, families, and communities to flourish.

FH’s new Program Model is a systems-based theory that builds resilience to unlock the potential for flourishing communities. FH believes that by building the resilient capacities of the communities using social and behavior change approach and transforming the systems in which they live and work, the children, families, and communities will achieve greater resilience to flourish. At the heart of the program model is the people we serve. The Program Model fundamentally redefines power and shifts power to the communities to define what value needs to be accrued and how.

It is against this backdrop that building capacities in HCD emerges as using a HCD approach will be critical to design and deliver on our program model.
