PROJECT DESCRIPTION
AET and IFAW is implementing a USAID-funded project ‘’Sustainable Management of Tsavo and Amboseli landscapes’ in Southern Kenya. The project is implemented in Tsavo Conservation Area and Greater Amboseli Ecosystem.
The aim of the project is to strengthen local institutions’ ability to develop a coordinated management approach with their members to enhance local stewardship, improved benefit sharing and the sustainable management of wildlife and biodiversity within the Tsavo Conservation Area and Greater Amboseli Ecosystem. This will be achieved through the following outcomes:
- Improved governance of Tsavo and Amboseli landscapes.
- Reduced threats and improved biodiversity conservation.
- Increased partnerships for landscape level economic growth and sustainability.
- Increased community and ecosystem resilience.
CONSULTANCY OBJECTIVE
This assignment seeks to develop a youth engagement strategy for the Amboseli region outlining strategic objectives, interventions and implementation plan for engaging youth in conservancies.
The consultant will undertake the following specific activities;
- Hold an inception meeting with AET team to get a clear understanding of AET’s mission, vision and goals for youth engagement.
- Review existing literature on youth engagement in conservation and conservancies
- Document successful best practices, experiences and lessons learned, as well as entrenched challenges resulting from past youth engagement efforts
- Carry key informant interviews with Amboseli landscape youths, men, and women in conservancies and relevant conservation partners and align to AET strategic objectives
- Conduct an assessment to understand the skills, aspirations, and interests of the youth in Amboseli and identify existing gaps.
- Document the youth engagement strategy to guide AET in engaging the youths.
- Develop a one-year action plan to implement the youth engagement strategy.
DELIVERABLES
- Inception report and work plan describing proposed activities and timelines for carrying out the assignment
- Presentation of the draft youth engagement strategy to AET for review
- Presentation of the Final youth engagement strategy to AET and the Amboseli youth forum for validation
- Final youth engagement strategy and action plan
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Advanced degree in community development, social studies, project management, natural resources management or any other relevant field.
- Verifiable experience in community-based strategy development.
- Proficiency in data analytics and report writing.
- Experience in conducting participatory qualitative and quantitative studies.
- Evidence of theoretical knowledge and practical application of cross-cutting issues in development such as youth and gender mainstreaming
