It seeks to change situations and systems that lead to violence. Much of AFSC’s work includes support to opportunities for dialogue and capacity building led by the affected communities.

About the Somali Program

AFSC believe that young people can positively transform the prevailing context of violent conflicts in Somalia into more secure, productive, and just places. Consequently, AFSC is implementing a Peacebuilding program in Somalia targeting the youth, with the approach of empowering them with peacebuilding, leadership, and advocacy skills.

In Somalia AFSC works in Mogadishu, Kismayu, Bosaso, Dhobley and Dadaab Refugees Camp in Kenya that host 95% refugees of Somalia origin.

About the Program South Sudan Program

AFSC is implementing a trauma healing program for enhanced peacebuilding in South Sudan and works directly with two (2) local partners and indirectly with 19 CBOs/FBOs in Juba, Mundri and Jur River for a period of three years. The program aims to heal peacebuilders of their secondary trauma, build the capacity of peacebuilders on primary and secondary trauma, development, and operationalization of work-based trauma healing policies, conduct advocacy and research on trauma healing and peacebuilding. Peacebuilders training on trauma healing has facilitated a process of individual healing of trauma and cascading of knowledge and skills acquired to other peacebuilders within their organizations, partners and communities served.

AFSC seeks to engage a consultant with broad knowledge, skills, and experience in safeguarding to conduct safeguarding training to strengthen the capacity of its partners in Somalia and South Sudan.

Scope of Assignment:

The consultant is expected to train exhaustively on safeguarding covering aspects including and not limited to:

  • Background and importance of safeguarding
  • Key terms in Safeguarding
  • Key components and principles of safeguarding
  • Legal & and policy frameworks
  • Best and current practices of safeguarding.
  • Preventing intentional and non-intentional harm that could occur during delivery of programs or interventions.
  • Safeguarding prevention toolkit including survivor-centered support.

Expected Outcomes

  • Deliver clear and easy to understand safeguarding training to AFSC partners and program staff.
  • Providing reference materials and tools to the participants.

Objectives of the Consultancy:

To train a team of AFSC partners from Somali, South Sudan, AFSC program and finance staff on safeguarding. Specifically, the Consultant(s) is expected to:

  • Develop training materials including any relevant case scenarios. • Develop effective reference materials for participants.
  • Share a package of training materials (handouts) for future reference.
  • Conduct in person training for AFSC ‘s Somali and South Sudan Partners and program staff.
  • Prepare and submit final training report.

Duration of the Assignment:

The assignment will be conducted and completed within 10 consultancy days between 14th to 29th February 2024.This time will be allocated to 2 days-preparation and initial meetings with AFSC team on consultancy, and 3 days- development of training materials,3 days -delivering the training and 2 days reporting.

Participants: 25 participants from the partners organizations in South Sudan, Somalia and 8 staff members of AFSC.

Training dates: 20th to 23rd February 2024

Applicant Requirement Desired Qualifications:

AFSC is seeking qualified, experienced, proactive, and dedicated expert with knowledge in safeguarding. The ideal candidate should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline such as social sciences, social work, political science, or any other related field.
  • Experience of peacebuilding work in a Conflict/post-conflict setting.
  • Previous experience in safeguarding training.

Key skills and competencies

  • Proven experience in developing and delivering safeguarding training, with a focus on prevention, support, detection, and survivor-centered approaches.
  • Knowledge of international safeguarding standards and best practices.
  • Strong communication with excellent facilitation and training skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English
