Background
American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Guided by the Quaker belief in the divine light of each person, AFSC works with communities and partners worldwide to challenge unjust systems and promote lasting peace. AFSC has more than 100 years of experience building peace in communities worldwide and works in the following ways: bridging and convening, community organizing and civil society strengthening, advocacy, research, and analysis. It seeks to change situations and systems that lead to violence. Much of AFSC’s work includes support to opportunities for dialogue and capacity building led by the affected communities.
About the Somalia Program
AFSC believe that young people can positively transform the prevailing context of violent conflicts in Somalia into more secure, productive, and just places. Consequently, AFSC is implementing a Peacebuilding program in Somalia targeting youth, with the approach of empowering them with peacebuilding, leadership, reconciliation, and advocacy skills.
In Somalia AFSC works in Mogadishu, Kismayu, Bosaso, Dhobley and Dadaab Refugees Camp in Kenya that host 95% refugees of Somali origin. Objectives of the Consultancy:
To train youths in Mogadishu, Somalia on Healing and Rebuilding of Communities (HROC). Specifically, the Consultant(s) is expected to:
- Develop training materials and training program.
- Conduct 9 days onsite training.
- Share a package of training materials (handouts & Case scenarios) for future reference.
- Prepare and submit final outcome training report.
Scope of assignment:
The consultant is expected to train basic and advanced level of Healing and Rebuilding of Communities (HROC) covering aspects including and not limited to:
- Understanding trauma and its impact on individuals and communities
- Conflict resolution and peacebuilding skills
- Community trauma healing
- Social cohesion and reconciliation strategies
- Community development and leadership skills
- Advocacy and communication skills Expected Outcomes
- Deliver clear and easy to understand Healing and Rebuilding of Community training to the targeted youth.
- Provide reference materials and tools to the participants.
- Outcome training report
Duration of the assignment:
The assignment will be conducted and completed within 20 consultancy days from April 22, 2024 to May 17, 2024.
Participants:
Twenty (20) youths selected from a group of youths previously trained in Alternative to Violence Program (AVP) in Mogadishu
Training dates: April 29, 2024 to May 9, 2024
Desired Qualifications:
AFSC is seeking a qualified, experienced, proactive, and dedicated expert with knowledge in Healing and Rebuilding of Communities.
- The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as social sciences, social work, trauma healing, Psychological Counselling, or any other related field.
- Experience in peacebuilding work in a Conflict/post-conflict setting.
- Previous experience in training on healing and rebuilding of communities. Key skills and competencies
- Proven experience in designing and delivering training programs on conflict resolution, healing, and reconciliation.
- Strong understanding of the Somali context and the challenges faced by Somali youth.
- Experience working with youth populations and delivery of culturally appropriate and trauma-informed approaches.
- Strong communication with excellent facilitation and training skills.
- Language: Excellent written and spoken English
