Job description

We are looking to appoint a Consultant in Medical Oncology with special interests in Lung and Breast cancer, based at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and Luton & Dunstable Hospital. This is a substantive post and comprises 10.25 programmed activities (PAs) and an on-call commitment.Mount Vernon is a well-respected cancer centre, providing care to over 5,000 new patients a year, based in Northwood, Middlesex. It is currently run by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (ENHT) and is in the process of merging with University College London Hospital (UCH), a leading tertiary cancer services provider. Mount Vernon will continue to provide high-quality care for cancer patients during the transition period, which is expected to complete by April 2024.The cancer centre will move to an established local acute hospital site, with access to intensive care facilities, whilst remaining a separate cancer centre. A networked satellite radiotherapy service will be developed to enhance the provision of cancer care to patients in the north of the area. Main duties of the job

This re-organised post is available immediately to provide site specific services to the local population and surrounding areas. Out-patient duties and SACT delivery will be at Luton Hospital. The post holder will specialise in the management of lung and breast malignancies, joining established dynamic teams of surgeons and oncologists.

At Mount Vernon, the post holder will be expected to work with members of the lung & breast teams in trial and clinical governance activities.At the Luton Hospital site, the post holder will work closely with the lung, breast and AOS multidisciplinary teams to provide a safe and high quality outpatient oncology service.

ENHT is seeking to maintain and expand the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre staff as we move to an exciting new future.

In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,108 and a maximum payment of £5,177per annum pro rata.

Qualifications/Training
Essential

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
  • MRCP or qualification of an equivalent level

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)

Previous Experience
Essential

  • Broad range of experience in Medical Oncology with specialist interests in breast & lung
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrable experience and participation in research

Desirable

  • Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals

  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
