Overview of position:
Danwaadag, our clients flagship durable solutions program in Somalia, predominantly engages women & girls through the establishment of Self Help Groups (SHGs). These community based groups serve as platforms for women facing similar challenges, often related to displacement, to come together & create a supportive environment where they can share experiences, knowledge & resources. The primary focus of Danwaadag’s SHG approach is to promote economic recovery & social capital, utilizing a “graduating approach” that encompasses various activities such as mobilization, training, capacity building, savings & credit initiatives & enterprise development.
An expanding body of research has revealed that forced displacement can significantly heighten the susceptibility to poor psychosocial well-being. While there is limited specific data available for Somalia, anecdotal evidence indicates that households affected by forced displacement encounter a multitude of simultaneous stressors, including but not limited to loss of livelihoods, poverty, food insecurity, perilous displacement journeys, substandard living conditions, limited access to service access, disruption of social networks, or the loss of family members, among various other factors. These challenges could directly impact psychosocial well being, or indirectly by giving rise to maladaptive coping mechanisms. Even though a substantial segment of displaced individuals show remarkable resilience, it is vital to acknowledge the necessity of addressing psychological distress & promoting psychosocial well being within displaced populations.
Training modules in essential coping skills are increasingly used to assist individuals in addressing common daily stressors. Such sessions could cover a wide range of topics related to displacement, including stress management, relaxation techniques & psychosocial support, among others. While existing curricula like the ‘women rise emotional support session’ by the International Rescue Committee are already available in Somalia, it is worth noting that previous interventions have primarily focused on victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) & have not specifically been tested for vulnerable women & girls affected by displacement. Considering that operational data from Danwadaag indicates that women & girls constitute the majority of displaced populations in the program’s areas of operation, implementing this intervention could address a critical gap in support services.
