Background:
Search for Common Ground Finance Team seeks to achieve excellence in financial management by providing accurate and timely financial information to Search management and programs and by adhering to established financial practices and accounting principles.

Team Summary:
The HQ Finance team has responsibility for the consolidated financial reporting, cash management, internal controls, and overall accounting operations at Search for Common Ground. The accounting process includes summarizing, analyzing and reporting these transactions to oversight agencies, regulators and tax collection entities, recording accounts, paying invoices, tracking assets and expenditures, managing payroll and keeping track of critical tax documents.

Summary of Position:
Search is seeking Officer, Accounting, who will support HQ Finance team (based in Washington DC). As a member of the team, he/she will perform various accounting, reporting and related data management functions on a daily basis and assist in month-end closing processes. The primary functions include preparing journal entries, reconciliation of accounts, A/R management, audit support, and other general accounting tasks. He/ she will adhere to and seek to improve existing internal controls while complying with and staying abreast of GAAP. This position requires a detail oriented, experienced finance professional who will provide accounting support for a high transaction and fast paced environment. This position will directly report to Director, Accounting and be based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The requirement would be part time (3 days per week) for an Initial duration of three months on contract, commencing from September 2024.

Key Responsibilities:
The duties of the Officer, Accounting are wide-ranging and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Account Reconciliations:
  • Monthly reconciliations of bank accounts
  • Reconciliation of Corporate credit cards and expense reports regarding Credit Card
Assist in Month-end Closing Processes:
  • Drafting of month-end transactions, including bank fees allocations, Corporate travel invoice allocations, and Corporate purchasing card expense reports
  • IT systems cost allocations to country offices
  • Reconciliation of all Balance Sheet accounts
  • Monthly preparation of overhead and revenue recognition entries for grants
Accounts Receivables recording and management:
  • Assist in reconciliation of Salesforce CRM and Intacct Accounting System 
  • Recording of grant receipts and unrestricted donations in Intacct Accounting System
Day-to-day accounting functions:
  • Vendor code creation
  • Preparation of Journal entries ensuring accuracy of Search’s General Ledger
  • Ensure all backup documentation is attached to Journal entries
Audit Support:
  • Ensure that all transactions are supported by original documentation.
  • Assist in the compiling of supporting documentation for corporate and various project audits.
Other Duties:
  • Contribute to the overall proper functioning of the Finance department by taking on any other duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Contribute to the overall improvement of the financial and accounting system in Search by providing recommendation to supervisor for consideration on specific areas that could be improved.
  • Contribute to teamwork and team play.
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Competences:
  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting/ Business Administration/ Commerce/ Finance or a part qualification in CA / AAT or a recognized professional certificate in accounting.
  • A minimum of six years relevant work experience
  • Extensive experience in working on the area of accounting and financial management in the International NGO nonprofit sector.
  • Experience in accounting processes and treasury management– transactions recording, reconciling, generating reports and analysis.
  • Experience in Operating Excel, Word, and Access are required.
  • Working knowledge of automated accounting systems and reporting tools, preferably in a non-profit environment; Knowledge of INTACCT Accounting system/ERP system and/or other accounting software is advantageous.
Skills & Personal Attributes:
  • Good written and verbal skills in the English language. Ability to communicate well in English
  • Must be comfortable in being a proactive member of the department.
  • Must seek to identify and communicate potential problems and propose solutions to the level of management appropriate to effect solutions.
  • Must be able to function effectively in a loosely structured, but complex work
  • environment and to set appropriate priorities and deal effectively with numerous simultaneous requirements.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities independently with minimal technical support from within the organization.
  • Ability to work under demanding environment.
  • Must be a patient and good communicator who can function in an organizational environment involving a diversity of cultures, languages, and personal interests and agendas.
  • Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, able to coordinate
Payment:
  • Payment will be made monthly, upon submission of a report and relevant invoices. All payments are subject to applicable taxes imposed by the government.
