Context and Core Functions / Responsibilities

Since 2014, the conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) resulted in large-scale displacement across Iraq; the effects of which continue to reverberate across the region. Humanitarian and protection need remain significant across the country, despite the discontinuation of the humanitarian cluster system and the transition away from a post-conflict context.

In Iraq various forms of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) are prevalent. Recognizing the invaluable expertise of local stakeholders and their pivotal role as primary actors within their communities, IOM seeks to promote localization and strengthen the role of local actors in delivering VAWG services.

IOM plans to integrate the SASA! Together approach, developed by Raising Voices, a non-profit organization into the current Community Based Protection (CBP) initiatives to tackle violence against women and girls. SASA! Together is a community mobilization approach that supports communities to create positive and sustainable changes around norms that perpetuate violence against women.

Through the scope of this consultancy, IOM is looking to have a translator who will translate the SASA! Together methodology from the English originals’ language to Arabic. The translator may be a translation firm or individual, provided they can keep standard translations across documents and can work within the timeline outlined. The translator will work within the existing style and templates of the English word version of SASA! Together and translate, using key terms from the translation dictionary provided.

IOM Iraq – Protection Division. This consultancy will be directly supervised by the Protection Officer (GBV) with overall supervision from the Protection Coordinator and Head of the Protection Division.

Core Functions / Responsibilities

  • Participate in an orientation on SASA! Together with staff and learn / agree upon all key terminology already established by the team (utilizing translation dictionary provided)
  • Translate all documents using existing English version word templates, keeping fonts, font size, and spacing consistent with English version except where there are specific grammatical differences in the new language. This consists of 6 books, additional SASA! Faith materials, 12 PowerPoint presentations, and 5 Access databases, further described in the deliverables section.
  • Must have own equipment for electronic submission of all documents.
  • Work closely with the Protection Officer and Protection team to understand the context and adapt the translation during the consultancy period.
  • Integrate changes and revisions/edits to design, per feedback from IOM. This may include up to three rounds of revisions, until an acceptable final can be achieved.
