Result of Service
An effective consultant will support the delivery of a successful publication on energy transition minerals, the delivery of module 4 of the SG Initiative on Transition minerals obtaining approval for project document for the mining and extractives high impact sector workstream and preliminary support for establishing a digital knowledge hub to compile information and share it with member States and relevant stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its Industry and Economy Division provides solutions to decision-makers and helps change the business environment by offering platforms for multi- stakeholder dialogue and cooperation, innovative policy options, pilot projects and creative market mechanisms to improve the quality of the environment and the well-being of citizens. It promotes sustainable patterns of consumption and production, makes efficient use of natural resources, ensures safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. This opportunity is located within the Consumption and Production Unit at UNEP. The Unit promotes Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in businesses worldwide, across several industrial sectors. It also supports and coordinates the Division and organization’s work on the agenda of circularity. More specifically the work of the Division with stakeholders from the mining sector has been covering the following priority areas: 1. Environmental Governance of extractives – Regulations / Standards: Enhance policy convening and outreach, stakeholder and capacity-building to promote better environmental governance and sustainable development goals implementation; 2. Science to Policy – Increasing knowledge and evidence on environmental impacts: provide policy-makers and stakeholders with impartial assessments, knowledge and science on environmental threats and impacts of the extractive industries; and 3. Circular Economy – Sustainable Value Chain – Innovation: Work with companies and international initiatives to encourage adoption of sustainable practices along the value chain and enhance resource efficiency. The Consumption and Production Unit is leading UNEP’s work on extractive industries, including the implementation of UNEA Resolutions on environmental aspects of minerals and metals management, the elaboration of policy documents on the issue of energy transition minerals and the implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. In this context, the Consumption and Production Unit is looking for a consultant specifically to support tasks related to the implementation of UNEA 6 resolution on environmental aspects of minerals and metals, supporting the delivery successful publications on energy transition minerals minerals, the delivery of module 4 of the SG Initiative on Transition minerals obtaining approval for project document for the mining and extractives high impact sector workstream and preliminary support for establishing a digital knowledge hub to compile information and share it with member States and relevant stakeholders. The consultant will deliver on the following tasks: 1) Support delivering a successful spotlight publication on energy transition minerals. This includes: – Participate in regular meetings with authors. – Support in the compilation of feedback received from internal and external reviewers in the template required for the internal approval processes. Deliverable 1: (b) Support with revisions to the spotlight publication (10 April 2024) Deliverable 2: (a) Support with final version of the spotlight publication (10 May 2024) Deliverable 3: (b) Support with the release of the final version of Spotlight Report (10 June 2024) 2) Support delivering final draft of module 4 to the UN Framework on Transition Minerals. This includes: – Participate in regular meetings with the UN agencies involved in the elaboration of the text. – Support in the compilation of feedback received from internal and external reviewers in the template required for the internal approval processes. Deliverable 2: (b) incorporation of feedback to Module 4 of the UN Transition Minerals Framework (10 May 2024) Deliverable 4: (b) support with approval of the final version of Module 4 of the UN Transition Minerals Framework (10 July 2024) 3) Support the mining and extractives team with obtaining approval for mining project document. This includes: – Support tasks related to arranging consultations with other teams on the project document. – Research specific aspects related to minerals and metals – Compile and integrate feedback received on the project document. – Perform other related duties as required. Deliverable 3: (a) First draft of the mining project document (10 June 2024). Deliverable 4: (a) Support with requesting feedback to the mining project document (10 July 2024). 4) Support with implementation of the UNEA 6/8 resolution on the environmental aspects of mining and metals This includes: – Preparing a compilation of information on frameworks and initiatives related to mining. Deliverable 5: Compilation of information on frameworks and initiatives related to mining (10 August 2024) Deliverable 6: Report on the status of establishment of a digital knowledge hub to compile information and share it with member States and relevant stakeholders (10 September 2024).
Qualifications/special skills
Previous experience on mining and extractives is desirable. At least one year’s demonstrated experience in project management, research and coordination. Previous experience with international organizations is an advantage. At least a bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, international relations, environmental policy, environmental, mining or chemical engineering, environmental economics, or related area. A first degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Languages
• Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish an advantage.
