In the Western Pacific Region (WPR), injuries kill nearly one million people every year. Major causes include road traffic injuries, falls, drowning, poisoning and burns, with 85% of fatal injuries occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
The Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases unit (PND) of the Division for Healthy Environments and Populations (DHP) at WHO WPRO has a vision to reduce major risk factors of noncommunicable diseases and decrease injuries, violence and alcohol harms across the region.
Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths word wide, estimated to account for over 235,000 deaths globally each year. WHO is leading the first global situational assessment on drowning, with findings to be published as the first WHO Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention. Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention will be instrumental to informing and scaling-up national, regional and global advocacy for action in this neglected public health issue.
The successful candidate will support the data collection and development of the global drowning report. In addition, the successful candidate will support the delivery of evidence-based interventions in priority countries in this region in the areas of drowning, alcohol control and other injuries and violence prevention.

- University degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field.

- Minimum five years of experience in public health, which include experience in data collection/analysis (such as surveys, datasets)
Skills/Technical skills and knowledge:
- A thorough knowledge of drowning prevention-related issues within the region
- Familiarity with the goals and procedures of international organizations (UN system, donors, non-governmental organizations)
- Computer proficiency in Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Language :
- Expert knowledge of English
