JOB DESCRIPTION

Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Multi Country Office (MCO) – Caribbean covers 22 countries and territories in the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean, which are part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Strides towards gender equality in the countries covered by the MCO have resulted in gains for women and girls in the Caribbean, relating primarily to high education rates, and increases in employment rates. However critical gaps remain, including the understanding of what is gender equality and why working towards its realisation is integral to countries’ advancing their development to ensure no one is left behind.

UN Women MCO – Caribbean stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five strategic priority areas – expanding women’s voice, leadership and participation; ending violence against women and girls; strengthening women’s full participation in conflict resolution and peace processes; enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting including climate change and disaster resilience. Developing knowledge products in these areas are a critical element in UN Women MCO- Caribbean’s programme.

The MCO has developed very strong knowledge products and tools over the tenure of the last strategic note, which contributed directly to the MCOs reputation as the knowledge broker on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Caribbean. The tools and products tie the normative framework to clear actions governments and civil society can take to implement more gender equitable programming and policies. The MCO’s programming highlights the importance of continuing to develop these tools and products and outlines a clear strategy for ensuring the accessibility and promotion of these tools to key actors.
