The Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising serves Johns Hopkins University undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering pursuing graduate education in medicine, dentistry, other health professions and law. A central component of service is to write Health Professions Committee Letters, which present a holistic overview of each candidate’s application to medical or dental schools.

Each summer, the Office of Pre-Professional Programs & Advising composes approximately 450 Committee Letters that support applicants to medical or dental school. We are seeking Content Writers who will play a central role in the writing of those Committee Letters. Content Writers convert applicant information into text suitable for use in the Health Professions Committee Letters. Content Writers work remotely and independently; they are responsible for editing their work as they write.

Review of applicants will start March 2024. Applicants being considered as finalists will be contacted via email and be asked to submit a draft committee letter as a writing sample.

Term of Appointment

Writer positions will run from approximatelyMarch 2023 thru August 2023.

Compensation

Writers will be paid $30/Hour.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend mandatory training prior to writing assignments being distributed.
  • Write committee letters according to guidelines provided.
  • Proofread letters as they are written.
  • On average, one letter should take approximately one and one-half (1.5) hours to draft and edit.
  • Collaborate and communicate with pre-Professional staff and advisors.
  • Comply with confidentiality agreement and ethical guidelines.
  • Meet specified deadlines for letters through employment term.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft office, specifically Microsoft Word.
  • Excellence in writing/editing/proofreading.
  • Fluency in English required.

  • One-page writing sample (non-creative writing; if available, a previously drafted letter of recommendation preferred).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Writing samples may be requested during the selection process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree strongly preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
