Controller

Position Description:  We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations and Team. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely closing of the books, financial reporting, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Essential Job Functions: 

• Direct and oversee all aspects of the finance and accounting functions of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
• Lead and manage the finance and accounting team.
• Complete the monthly close process, including general ledger account reconciliation and journal entries.
• Prepare timely and accurate monthly financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and OMB circulars A-133 and A-122.
• Prepare cash flow projections and offer consultation of profit and loss outlays monthly, quarterly, and annually.
• Prepare fiscal status reports for the GBI Board of Directors on a monthly and quarterly basis.
• Manage and lead the organization through annual financial audits including Single Audit, Workers Compensation Plan, and 401K Plan.
• Prepare the organization’s federally negotiated indirect cost rate (NICRA) application annually and lead negotiation through assignment.
• Support the preparation of the organization, program, project, and grant budgets.
• Support organizational and programmatic reports on “budget vs. actual” analysis.
• Develop quarterly goals and monitor key performance indicators to measure performance and ensure successful team and individual outcomes the team is performing at a high level.
• Assist in reviewing, developing and/or revising written financial and accounting policies and procedures for compliance with federal, state, county and NGO grants, agreements, and contracts.
• Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules.
• Review, streamline, and continuously improve financial processes and software.
• Promote effective communication in the Business Operations Department and across the organization.

• Education:
  • Minimum a  Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or other business related field; certification as CPA or equivalent preferred.
• Experience:
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller, preferably with  nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 3 years in supervisory or management capacity.
  • Advanced financial software and ERP systems, preferably NetSuite by Oracle.
  • Working with federal agencies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial concepts to senior leadership.
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving.
  • Highly organized and efficient, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to identify and drive process improvements across financial operations.
  • Proven ability to build cross-functional relationships and collaboration at all levels of the organization.
• Preferred:
  • Proven experience participating in successfully completing a Single Audit preferred.
  • Advanced technical skills in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Google Suite preferred.

LOCATION

Based at GBI offices in Reno, NV The “Biggest Little City in the World” the greater Reno-Spark metropolitan area has a population of over 435,000. The city is a high desert landscape ~4,500 feet above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains along the Truckee River, as it flows from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Weather is mild, but with distinct four seasons. Reno offers easy access to world-class outdoor recreation including driving distance to Yosemite and Death Valley National Parks, the Pacific Ocean, and California redwood forests. Closer to home, Nevada offers more natural hot springs than any other state in the country, over 150 named mountain ranges, and 30 peaks over 11,000 feet. Recreation and entertainment includes eight major ski resorts in proximity to the Reno-Tahoe airport; fishing and boating on Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, and Pyramid Lake; cultural festivals throughout the summer along the banks of the Truckee River; a thriving food scene and more.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Starting annual salary is $93k – $117k DOE (NOTE: in Nevada there is no state income tax). In addition to a competitive base salary, this full-time, onsite position includes company-paid comprehensive medical, dental (with option to upgrade in coverage), and vision insurance, as well as $25,000 Life/AD&D policy. Voluntary short-term and long-term disability policies are available, and voluntary Life/AD&D policies for family members.  Mental health support resources are employer provided, as is 401(k) retirement savings with up to 4% GBI match, competitive PTO accrual, paid holidays (12 per year), and family leave. Total compensation package is $103k – $227k per year, DOE.  This exciting role contributes to GBI’s significant positive impacts within the fields of environmental research, education, and conservation.
