The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator in the Copenhagen office to provide administrative assistance to the Copenhagen team. The Copenhagen office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in Denmark.

This fixed-term position is at 37 hours per week for about eight months for parental leave coverage with an anticipated start on September 15th, 2024, and an anticipated end in May 2024. This role requires availability to work occasional nights and weekends to staff fundraising events.

The Coordinator will be based in Copenhagen and will report to the Senior Associate Director of Development in Copenhagen.

The successful candidate will be expected to work from the Copenhagen office at least 3 days per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate the preparation, production and follow-up of major organizational fundraising, cultivation, and outreach events, including, but not limited to, the Voices for Justice Dinner, film screenings, and private events, at the direction of the Senior Associate Director. Assist in strategizing and implementing new initiatives and partnerships.
  2. Provide special event support for the Annual Dinner, film screenings, and other events throughout the year by managing mailings, overseeing volunteers, coordinating materials, working with vendors, and assume responsibility for the creation of newsletters, e-mailings, invitations and web content. Maintain and help grow the Denmark HRW account on social media, primarily Facebook, and Instagram, as needed;
  3. Provide development and fundraising support including gift entry, prospect research, foundation research, translation tasks, tracking and updating donor database information, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data;
  4. Liaise with HRW Next Generation network in Denmark and develop, support and expand the network as appropriate;
  5. Assist in fundraising and events in Norway and assume responsibility for donor tracking and gift entry for Norway.
  6. Provide administrative and operational support to the Copenhagen office, including scheduling, preparing required materials for and taking minutes at meetings and briefings, responding to inquiries, ordering supplies and assist in coordinating travel arrangements and guidance for visiting colleagues.
  7. Organize logistical aspects of events and fundraising by maintaining key spreadsheets, documenting and processing gifts received, preparing solicitation and acknowledgement materials in a timely manner, coordinating outreach and event materials, collating follow-up fundraising reports and internal logistics, liaising with internal teams and processes, etc.
  8. Maintain the Salesforce database by updating donor and financial information accurately and in a timely manner and overseeing data entry for special events and cultivation initiatives; ensure the integrity and confidentiality of our data.
  9. Support the daily activities for the Copenhagen Circle of Friends, donors, and prospects including conducting research on individual and foundation prospects, using various online tools to prepare donor solicitation strategies, maintaining extensive files, contact lists and databases, scheduling and preparing briefs and materials for meetings, and drafting donor communications;
  10. Assist with the recruitment, inclusion and mentoring of interns as appropriate; and
  11. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalate experience, in human rights, international relations, social science, communication or a related field is required. An apprenticeship in a relevant field (e.g. a commercial apprenticeship) and two years of post-apprenticeship professional experience would also be acceptable.

Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in Danish and English are required.
  3. Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including donors, are required.
  4. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
  5. Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
  6. Analytical skills and the natural curiosity and creativity needed to conduct online research are required.
  7. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  8. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required; experience with Salesforce or other donor databases is highly desirable.
  9. Experience with event planning, community engagement, and/or philanthropy is preferred.
  10. Interest in human rights is desirable.
