The Department of European & International Social & Political Studies (EISPS) is looking to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the Politics of East Asia for the Academic year 2024-25 (0.5 FTE October 2024 – July 2025). EISPS offers three highly selective and challenging four-year programmes that allow our students to experience the best of UCL Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and prepare them for international careers: European Social and Political Studies BA; European Social and Political Studies BA: Dual Degree with Sciences Po; and International Social and Political Studies BA. The programmes combine specialisation in a humanity or social science with a broad base in European or international history, law, politics and philosophy as well as fluency in a foreign language.
About the role
The successful candidate will be expected primarily to provide teaching, supervision and associated administrative duties.This will involve teaching three modules over the course of the academic year. Candidates should demonstrate a broad interest in East Asia from a social science perspective; areas of specialization may include international relations, history, geography, political economy, environmental studies, gender studies, human rights, and sociology. Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of diverse, innovative, and multidisciplinary research and teaching. The modules expected to be taught include: • Politics of East Asia (Term 2) • Politics of Japan (Term 2) • Revolution and Reform in China’s Long 20th Century (Term 1) As well as giving lectures and seminars, the post holder will be expected to set and mark essay topics or examinations, to fulfil personal tutoring responsibilities and to carry out an enabling role at EISPS by participating in dissertation workshops and training during Term 1 of the 2024/25 academic year. It is expected that the successful candidate will actively follow UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities, and maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations. The post holder may be asked to carry out other specific tasks and duties as required by the Head of Department. This appointment will be at 0.5 FTE for the duration of 10 months total (1st October 2024 – 31st July 2025). Interviews are expected to be held in the first week of September.
About you
Applicants wil hold or be soon to be awarded a PhD in Politics, International Studies, or a related discipline. They will provide evidence of specialism in the politics of East Asia Teaching, researching or similar employment experience in higher education. They will be familiar with a virtual learning environment (VLE) and/or digital assessment platform. They will have a record of supervision of academic work by undergraduates, masters or doctoral students and evidence of administrative experience in a university setting. We expect excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, the ability to teach courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are looking for candidates with a proven record of ability to manage time and work to deadlines Evidence of teaching excellence (e.g. student evaluation forms).
