Corporate Volunteering Events Leader

Salary: £28,500 – £30,500 (FTE) 4 or 5 days
Contract length: 0.8/1.0 FTE for 12 months (with possibility to extend)
Location: Working on-site at outdoor locations around London, at Thames21
offices at Guildhall and Bow, and at Thames21 offices and/or stores at Bow, Brent and
Greenwich, and occasional working from home.
Report to: Head of Fundraising
Liaison with: Corporate Volunteering Officer, Thames Programmes Manager,
Thames21 Event Support Staff and Contractors. Occasionally, Thames21 Project Officers (for
tributary events), local authorities, Port of London Authority

Purpose of the job

The purpose of this job is to plan, prepare for, lead and deliver river clean-up and
restoration events (1x half day event and 1 x full day event or 2 x half day events a week) for
corporate volunteer groups, including planning, timing, conducting pre-event visits and risk
assessments, lead the event on the day, briefing, inspiring, motivating and thanking
volunteers, sort and load/unload equipment, set-up and break-down, clean, sort and maintain
equipment post-event.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare for, lead and deliver river clean-up and restoration events for corporate
    volunteer groups, including planning, timing, conducting pre-event visits and risk assessments,
    lead the event on the day, sort and load/unload equipment, set-up and break-down, clean, sort
    and maintain equipment post-event
  • Fill and submit forms relevant to event booking such as PLA, Canal & Rivers Trust, and
    Leaside Canoes
  • Engage, inspire and motivate volunteers, taking full responsibility for delivering
    successful and safe events and collect content for Thames21 communications
  • Brief volunteers on and lead them in a range of environmental activities, including
    clean-ups on the Thames foreshore, riverbanks of tributaries and in-channel, vegetation
    management such as removing invasive species or clearing scrub to improve diversity, planting
    and maintaining wetlands, tree-planting, toe board removal, etc
  • Brief volunteers about Thames21’s aims, the purpose of the volunteering activity and the
    direct impact it will have on river health, and essential Health and Safety protocols, ensuring
    that volunteers comply. At the end of the event, thank participants and signpost them towards
    other Thames21 activities and volunteering events.
  • Liaise with Corporate Volunteering Officer to ensure that groups’ needs are clearly
    understood and met
  • Liaise with the Corporate Volunteering Officer on event details; communicate directly with
    corporate contacts on logistics if necessary; report promptly on event data and feedback and
    maintain records on Thames21’s database;
  • Stand in for the Corporate Volunteering Officer during any absence and ensure that
    corporate volunteering events are adequately staffed and delivered, stepping in if necessary
  • Supervise and liaise with Event Support Contractors to ensure safe, effective and enjoyable
    events
  • Regularly generate and adapt Risk Assessments and Method Statements in advance of events
  • Where necessary, conduct site visits and attend inventory days
  • Oversee, brief and where necessary, train Event Support Contractors and volunteers in
    setting out and offering refreshments before and after the event; and in boot cleaning,
    biosecurity and hand washing stages at the end of event
  • With Event Support Contractors, load and unload the Thames21 vehicles with event equipment
    before and after the event and manage the cleaning of event equipment if required
  • Book vans for events and drive Thames21 vehicles around London to equipment stores and
    event locations.

times and the post holder will be expected to carry out other reasonable duties from time to
time which are broadly consistent with other Thames21 activities and with those in this
document.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • The postholder must be willing to travel throughout Greater London and hold a full, clean
    UK driving licence
  • The postholder must be fully comfortable with driving 3.5 tonne Vans and require no
    training
  • The postholder must be able to undertake physically demanding work regularly e.g., loading
    and unloading vans
  • 25 days paid annual leave are available (pro rata) plus public holidays. In addition, the
    Thames21 office. is closed between Christmas and New Year
