| Cost Estimating Manager Job Summary Generate complete estimates for Campus Special Projects (large new construction projects ranging in costs from $1 million to $90 million plus) at each design phase (schematic design, design development, and construction design). Prepare cost estimates for a variety of proposed shop and contract construction projects (approximately 300-400+ per year). These cost estimates are used by the principles of the projects in order to help them decide whether a project is or is not financially practical. Continually analyze construction costs to keep BYU pricing in line with the current construction market. Essential Functions 1. Formulate cost estimates Campus Special Projects (large remodel, additions, and new construction projects) - Prepares detailed cost estimates for all categories of the construction process at each design phase (schematic design, design development, and construction design) for all major building projects in order to establish or confirm adequate project budgeting.
- Total value of projects estimated varies but can range from $1 million to $90 million + per project.
- Prepare BYU Shop-performed (N.I.C., or Not in Contract) cost estimates for shop involvement in Special Projects.
- Attend weekly design meetings for each project throughout the design process to provide cost analysis.
- Consult with general contractors, architects, engineers and shop personnel about materials and methods to be used on projects.
2. Formulate cost estimates for proposed remodel projects - Total value of projects estimated varies but often can exceed $200,000,000 per year.
- Prepare cost estimates for proposed shop remodel projects.
- Review plans and provide input for upcoming proposed remodeling projects.
- Consult with general contractors, subcontractors and shop personnel about materials and methods to be used on projects.
3. Assist architects and designers in proposed projects analysis - Review and discuss preliminary plans and designs.
- Visit sites of projects both before construction and during.
- Recommend optional methods to reduce cost without reducing the quality of construction.
4. Supervise level one and level two cost estimators and students - Help find and hire qualified cost estimator for part time position and student.
- Coordinate work load with hired help to make sure resources are being properly utilized.
- Supervise and manage employee¿s work ethic, hours, standards compliance, etc.
5. Maintain cost files (5%) - Review work orders and maintain a record of previous projects and their costs.
- Review shop labor production and material prices.
- Strive to improve the cost estimating process in the department.

6. Other duties and responsibilities assigned by management (5%) Qualifications: Minimum required: - Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management + 5 years practical experience
Preferred: - Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management + 15 years practical experience
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications: - This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management and a general knowledge of more than twenty different building trades and how the different trades interact and coincide with one another. This position also requires the ability to visually construct the project from beginning to end in order to ensure that all phases and aspects of the project have been considered.
