Summary of Duties:

Duties of the Counselor will include providing counseling services, case management and crisis support primarily for WSU Health Sciences undergraduate, graduate and professional students located on the WSU Yakima campus. Provide remote counseling services for students in Spokane and those in rotation as needed. Develop and implement outreach, programming and trainings for students, faculty and staff. Maintain records as required by law, rules and policies. Provides documentation for students who may need academic disability accommodations

This position is located in Yakima, WA.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Counseling: 65%

  • Provides culturally sensitive individual and group counseling over a broad range of issues.
  • Conducts intakes and provides counseling for undergraduate, graduate and professional health sciences students both in-person and virtually.
  • Provides intensive case management and crisis referral services.
  • Maintains clinical records as required by the Washington State Administrative Code. Ensures all records are kept confidential and that Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws are maintained by self and counseling staff.
  • Participates in weekly clinical supervision meetings and consultation meetings with clinical supervisor and counseling team. Receive direction from clinical supervisor and consult with the counseling team.
  • Makes referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, psychiatrists or hospitals when appropriate.
  • Provides evening and weekend counseling on rare occasion.

Mental Health Educational Programming: 30%

  • Develops and presents educational programming to students, faculty and staff.
  • Facilitates training for students, faculty, and staff to recognize and respond to students experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Adapts programming to meet the needs of the audience.

Other: 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in Student Affairs and other university committees

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field and the ability to become independently licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington within one (1) year of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be independently licensed as a mental health counselor, social worker, or related in the State of Washington at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience counseling “high-risk” difficulties (e.g. suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)).
  • Demonstrated experience with public speaking, presenting to small and large groups, and development of training materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing crisis intervention, crisis management, or intensive case management services.
  • Occasional travel is required.
  • May work flexible hours including evenings and weekends on rare occasion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Counseling/Clinical experience within a university population.
  • Experience and interest in providing services to diverse student populations (e.g. students of color, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) students, international students, veterans).
  • Certified Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Trainer to provide trainings to students, staff and faculty.
  • Experience counseling health sciences professionals/students (e.g. nursing, pharmacy, medicine, etc.).

Monthly Salary: $5,139.79 – $7,189.19; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
