Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve – Interpretation and Education Internship

Summary: The National Park Service is recruiting two, 16-week (640-hours) individual placements to provide educational and interpretation assistance at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO) beginning July through October 2026 (start and end dates are flexible depending on availability). The individual placements will serve with the interpretive and education teams within the Visitor Services Division.

About Northwest Youth Corps (NYC):

Northwest Youth Corps was created in 1984 to offer teenagers and young adults an education-based, work experience modeled after the historic Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s. Today, we serve over 1,000 youth and young adults each year across a four-state region who restore critical habitat, build trails, lead volunteers, educate youth, and respond to local and national disasters.

Duties and Responsibilities: Major duties are related to learning and working alongside personnel in visitor services at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO). The individual placements will communicate with the public about the natural and cultural resources of CRMO, staff the visitor center and provide orientation and information about CRMO and the National Park Service including recreational opportunities and park regulations.

Specific activities include:

  • Staffing visitor center front desk.
  • Researching the natural and cultural resources of CRMO.
  • Roving trails and contacting visitors. This could be on snowshoes or cross-country skis.

Duty Location:

Duties are performed within the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Arco, ID. Arco offers small-town amenities including a grocery store, hospital, and close proximity to Craters of the Moon.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
  • U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
  • Must pass a background/driver check
  • Ability to work outdoors, hike, and assist the public in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team in an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to give direction and talk to the public.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A positive, can-do, helpful attitude.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Northern Rocky Mountain and Snake River Plain natural resources and plants, including geology, volcanology, astronomy.
  • College coursework in Natural Sciences, Parks & Recreation, Psychology, English or Education.
  • Experience with professional social media, including short video creation and editing.
  • Experience in presenting informational or educational talks to the general public.
  • Driver’s License
  • Personal transportation

Terms of Employment:

  • Individual placements will complete the 16-week program from approximately July through October 2026. The placements will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays.
  • Individual placements are responsible for providing their own food. Personal transportation needed.
  • Housing may be provided.

Benefits:

  • Individual Placements will earn a total stipend of $8,960, dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 16-week term of service.
  • The living allowance is taxable.
