Job Duties

The majority of the job duties involve physical labor of building and managing, natural areas, perennial gardens, rain gardens, prairie gardens, lawn alternatives, natural shorelines, and other sustainable landscape features using native plants. This work can be considered moderate physical activity, especially when done day after day. You will learn the everyday, on the ground methods of how to design and build these features and be given the opportunity to provide input into decision making.

You may be required to apply herbicides to prepare the ground for installation or for management.

You will have the opportunity to learn from other crew members in related and different sustainability disciplines.

If you are interested in taking a leadership position in the crew, please let us know at the time of application.

Time Frame

The season begins in Mid-April when the field crew will begin installations at job sites. We serve Washtenaw and surrounding counties. Depending on where you live, you will either start your day at the nursery or at the job site. Thus, transportation is a requirement. The workday is typically around 8 hours, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. Work is scheduled when the weather is good, and projects are available. Unscheduled project time will often be spent working on projects around our wholesale plant nursery, New Leaf Natives. You can take one week of unpaid vacation. The installation season will begin to wind down in Mid- November, however, there will be more opportunities for extended work around the nursery and with invasive species management.

Requirements

  • Have passion and enthusiasm for conservation and restoration work
  • Be physically fit enough to do moderate physical labor during summer days
  • Have experience manipulating physical objects
  • Work ethic, team player, leadership abilities, somewhat rebellious

Preferred but not required

We are working to develop a natural hardscaping division of Creating Sustainable Landscapes. We would like to find a crew member who has experience with installing natural stone paths, steps, patios, retaining walls and more to help develop this aspect of our business.
