Purpose:
Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM) engages motivated young adults, ages 18 – 30, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the western United States. CCNM crews serve in a variety of National Parks, National Forests, and other public areas. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, historic preservation, chemical and mechanical invasive plant removal, and local environmental service projects. CCNM provides opportunities for members to learn about the local environment and conservation issues throughout the duration of the program. Selected members are placed on a crew that will then collaborate to perform project work.
Project work may vary due to seasonality and environmental safety concerns. Projects that crews typically work on may include, but are not limited to:
Description of Duties:
CCNM AmeriCorps members serve a term of National Service in the State of Arizona and parts of the Southwest on professionally supervised crews. Members serve in all weather conditions, working on a variety of projects focused on environmental conservation and habitat restoration. It is a field program where members will camp multiple days near a project site. Projects can be front country or backcountry, with limited to no access to showers and running-water toilets. Backcountry projects involve carrying out all personal supplies (tent, sleeping bag, clothing) as well as group camp supplies (food, water, gear), to the campsite and worksite. Members are expected to complete project work and practice appropriate safety procedures in all areas. This includes safe use of and maintenance of hand and power tools as necessary.
Most importantly, participants must be willing to be an active member of a team, or crew, of up to seven individuals from different areas and backgrounds who are all interested in conservation.

CCNM is an independent, non-residential program – we do not provide housing. It is advised that all members supply their own outdoor gear and equipment such as a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, day pack, multi-day pack, work pants, hiking/work boots, etc. because rental supplies are limited and given out on a first-come, first-served basis. A suggested gear list will be provided before starting the term of service. CCNM will provide the tools, personal protective gear, crew meal budget, and project transportation. Additionally, CCNM has Pro Deals opportunities to receive discounts on some outdoor gear brands.
Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, satisfactorily completed assignments, and met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to: bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
