The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region as our North Columbia Type 2IA Crew Superintendent. 

The North Columbia Type 2IA Crew is an integral part of the suppression efforts within the Northeast Region and the state of Washington. The Crew also needs to be prepared for potential out-of-state assignments. The NC20 Crew is based within the East Zone of the Northeast Region, which is the most active fire program in the state of Washington. It features high-density urban interface fuels and complex jurisdictions. Interested candidates need to be prepared for a fast-paced, dynamic environment where ensuring safe, effective suppression operations and building a positive environment with a commitment to personnel and professional growth of the team is a priority. This position supports the Wildland Fire Protection Strategy and the Forest Health Strategic Plan for Eastern Washington by supporting suppression needs and associated activities supporting suppression efforts during an active fire season.  

The North Columbia Crew Superintendent is the main point of contact for all matters regarding the Crew. This includes but is not limited to the recommendation of hiring, assigning work, delegation of duties, training, crew standards, performance evaluations, and problem-solving. Successful candidates need to have the ability to foster positive working relationships with other Region employees, Federal Agencies, Rural Fire Departments, and the general public.  

The North Columbia Handcrew is looking for successful candidates with a proven record in team building and team leadership.  The successful candidate will be someone who is dedicated to building upon a safe, positive environment and maintaining the cohesiveness of the crew.

Responsibilities:
The North Columbia Crew Superintendent is responsible for the following:

  • Responsible for the hiring of permanent staff and overseeing the hiring of seasonal staff.
  • Responsible for assigning work for the Crew.
  • Responsible for the training and preparedness of the Crew to be initial attack ready by June 1.
  • Provide wildland fire response in the region while being prepared and available for fire response out of the region.
  • Coordinate the Crews’ availability to assist with prescribed fire, community resilience projects, and forest health treatments.
  • Ensures that the assigned work center is maintained throughout the year.  Coordinates with Region staff on any deficiencies and/or building maintenance.

Required Qualifications: 

  • NWCG Qualification as Single Resource Crew Boss.
  • Experience in agreement and contract negotiations.
  • Supervisory experience, which may include fire line supervision.
  • Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Encourages team unity through sharing information or expertise, working together to solve problems, and putting team success first.
  • Accustomed to tailoring communication to the needs and preferences of others.
  • Creates a positive work environment where all staff are motivated to do their best.
  • Safely performs work at all times. Avoids shortcuts that increase health and safety risks to self or others.
