Job Summary:
The humanitarian needs in Ethiopia’s Northern Ethiopia region are quickly escalating and bringing significant instability and vulnerability to the affected population. In response to the crisis, FHI 360 will implement an integrated program that provides life-saving activities under health, nutrition, WASH, and protection that will meet the critical needs of the affected communities.
FHI 360 is seeking an experienced Health and Nutrition Coordinator to lead the organizational humanitarian health and nutrition intervention in Northern Eastern and Somali regions in Ethiopia. The Health and Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for developing and leading technical programming and plays a critical role in ensuring the organization’s emergency programming is responsive to the needs of conflict-affected populations in Ethiopia. They will ensure humanitarian activities are evidence-based and adhere to technical standards for the field, and as circumstances demand, engage at all stages of an emergency, from the initial acute phase to transition and recovery, and will support technical programs from assessment and conception to close-out and evaluation.
Based in Addis Ababa, this position is open to national candidates only. FHI 360 offers a competitive salary and benefits scheme.
Accountabilities:
- Lead Health and nutrition humanitarian programmingwith the goal of improving the well-being of affected communities through access to primary health, community health and reproductive health care, community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), and strengthen health systems in the areas of implementation.
- Establish the start of the health and nutrition programming, monitor the situation to ensure flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs on the ground.
- Monitor progress on the delivery of all health- and nutrition-related activities and ensure that objectives are being met on time and on scope per annual workplans.
- Conduct all health- and nutrition-related assessments, provide technical guidance on appropriate emergency activities, and devise sector-specific response strategies for the acute and transitional phases of emergency operations in crisis-affected communities.
- Monitor quality of programming and ensure clinical and programmatic supervision.
- Identify gaps in quality of care and provide appropriate training and support to all medical staff as needed.
- Develop partnerships and ensure effective coordination with local service providers and international organizations operating in the sector and attend health cluster meetings.
- Work with operations staff and partners to ensure pharmaceutical and medical commodities and services are procured, handled, and managed properly, in accordance with the organization’s supply-chain management protocols.
- Manage health and nutrition program budget, including routine expense forecasting and pipeline analysis.
- Determine staffing needs for health and nutrition programming, conduct recruitment in collaboration with management and home office technical staff, as necessary.
- Manage health and nutrition sector field personnel supporting the program and build their capacity to effectively respond to the health component of the project.
Applied Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge and application of Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) and Sphere standards and Red Cross/NGO Code of Conduct.
- Knowledge of health and nutrition needs in conflict affected areas,primary healthcare, and CMAM.
- Knowledge of data collection and the ability to analyze and interpret data to contribute to program implementation.
- Experience working with Donors and preferably with the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) preferred.
- Experiencing managing budgets and writing proposals.
- Strong interpersonal skills andprevious experience managing teams.
- Ability to interact professionally with culturally and linguistically diverse staff and clients.
- English fluency required; fluency in the local language preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated sensitivity in diverse, cross-cultural settings.

Supervision Given/Received:
- Regularly interacts with senior management and HQ based staff.
- Ability to motivate, mentor, and empower individuals to achieve expectations and goals set for the functional unit.
- Ability to delegate tasks appropriately.
- Provide input on country/project staff performance reviews.
- In coordination with senior management, hire/terminates country/project staff.
- Reports to the Deputy Response Coordinator – Programs.
Education**:
- Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Medicine, Nursing, Public Healthor Related Field.
- Master or other advanced medical degree preferred.
Experience**:
- 5 – 8 years leading complex on-site emergency Health response projects and/or programs.
- Experience establishing startup operations/projects in new countries preferred.
- Experience working in conflict areas and/or fragile settings.
- Prior work experience in aninternational or local non-governmental organization (NGO), working in health in humanitarian settings.
- Demonstrable experience designing and leading technical assessments using proven and effective methodologies; strong background in outcome monitoring and evaluation preferred.
- Experience coordinating complex programs with wide variety of stakeholders.
- Previous experience working with pharmaceutical supply management and importation of pharmaceuticals.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Ability to travel to remote field site locations that lack basic essentials including but not limited to the conflict-affected areas of Northern Ethiopia (Amhara, Afar, and Tigray).
- Candidate must be in good physical condition and understand that medical care is not readily available at duty station.
Technology to be Used:
- Computer, Microsoft Office 365 (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail), office telephone, cell phone and printer/copier.
Travel Requirements:
- 50% throughout Ethiopia
