An exciting opportunity to join Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre and play a significant
role in developing biodiversity recording across the county.
Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre is one of over 70 Local Environment Record Centres in the UK
and is focused on collating, managing and analysing species, habitat and wildlife site data for
Cumbria to better inform decision-making across the county. Formed in 2011 at Tullie, CBDC
evolved from the Museum’s Natural History Records Bureau which was established in 1902 and was
one of the earliest biological recording centres in the world. We currently hold over 2.7
million species records and aim to double this in the next five years to provide a more
accurate biodiversity baseline for Cumbria.
We are looking to recruit a Recording Officer who will manage all incoming records, ensure data
quality checks are undertaken on the veracity of data received, and promote recording to
different audiences. The role will work closely with county recorders, local societies and
national organisations to maintain data flow and raise awareness of biological recording.
Offering an exciting opportunity to combine an interest in wildlife and wildlife communication
with an interest in data management, the role would suit an established ecologist interested in
developing their data skills further or a data specialist interested in developing their
natural history interests. Either way, excellent communication skills and a good understanding
of ecology/natural history are a must!
Based at CBDC at Tullie in Carlisle, the role will involve extensive collaboration with
individuals and organisations across the county so is likely to involve travel across the
county to organise events, attend meetings, and provide talks. Hybrid working will be permitted
whenever the requirements of the role permit.
