The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking an intermediate-level Cybersecurity Specialist to join the Information Technology Services Division (ITS). The Cybersecurity Unit (CSU) ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of agency data by identifying, engineering, planning, and deploying security solutions throughout IT systems’ lifecycle.

In this role, you will focus on risk identification, management, and security review activities. You will support WDFW’s security solutions both on-premise and in the cloud, playing a key role in securing connectivity between WDFW networks, the State Government Network (SGN), and cloud-based resources. Additional responsibilities include monitoring security solutions, assisting with vulnerability management, and participating in state-level Design Reviews. This position requires collaboration with all IT staff to improve the security of existing infrastructure and services, remaining flexible and innovative to support the agency’s mission.

Duties

Here is what you will be doing, 

Risk Assessment:

  • Conducts formal documented risk assessments of WDFW systems processing CAT3 or higher data once every three years in accordance with OCIO policy.
  • Conducts other formal documented risk assessments of new systems or major updates to existing systems as required.
  • Works in conjunction with the Vulnerability Analyst and Technical Owners to ensure vulnerability scans are conducted against systems being assessed and incorporates those findings into risk assessments.
  • Research remediation actions, documents findings in formal risk assessment and/or Plan of Action and Milestones (POAM) and assists Technical owners with remediation efforts.

Security Review:

  • Conducts internal security review for new and existing hardware and software requests.
  • Documents findings and provides hardware and software assessment reports.
  • Assists in Washington State Office of Cybersecurity (OCS) Design reviews.

Solutions Administration:

  • Provides input for the WDFW security offerings, both on-premises and in the cloud (Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure). 
  • Researches and assists the CSU team in the designing, implementing, and supporting of WAN, LAN, and wireless security solutions to include system and server security configuration, network device hardening, and patch management.    
  • Works in conjunction with CSU staff to design, support, and maintain centralized monitoring and logging for server, storage, and network infrastructures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Office setting may be required to work in tight spaces. Also works in data closets and datacenter. 
    • Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  • Schedule:
    • Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Some travel may be required to regional and other remote offices.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand tools and networking equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interacts with WDFW staff, WaTech, telco providers and vendors.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in an IT related field

And

  • Four (4) or more years of IT experience within the last 6 years, including network, server, or service support and connectivity in a medium to large organization.
  • One (1) or more years of experience within the last 6 years, with cybersecurity risk assessment methodologies. 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Must pass fingerprint and background check due to working with law enforcement and sensitive data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • CompTIA SEC+
  • Cisco Certification(s)
  • Juniper Certification(s)
  • Microsoft Certification(s)
  • Experience working in cloud-based environments such as AWS and Azure.
  • Experience performing risk assessments against critical infrastructure, software and/or hardware solutions.
