Damage Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Damage Technician based in Greybull, Wyoming. This hands-on role offers a unique opportunity to directly support wildlife management while helping landowners and communities address real-world wildlife challenges.

In this position, you’ll work alongside Department personnel to assist with wildlife depredation control, damage claim investigations, and conflict resolution. Your efforts will help balance the needs of wildlife with those of the people who live and work on the land. You’ll also contribute to wildlife data collection and disease surveillance, playing an important role in maintaining healthy wildlife populations.

You’ll support the Wildlife Division’s Access Yes Program by helping maintain and improve public hunting and fishing access. From signing access areas to enhancing opportunities for outdoor recreation, your work will help connect people to Wyoming’s natural resources while supporting responsible wildlife management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

• Assist game wardens in limiting depredation by big game, game birds, and trophy game animals to crops and livestock.
• Routinely communicate with landowners experiencing wildlife damage, ensuring relationships are maintained.
• Assist regional personnel with wildlife conflict situations in urban and rural settings in an appropriate manner.
• Humanely euthanize sick and injured wildlife.
• Communicate with homeowners, landowners, and other interested parties to provide information regarding wildlife conflict situations.
• Assist with the collection of biological data and observations during wildlife and habitat surveys.
• Collect lymph nodes from harvested deer and elk using a scalpel and forceps, and record data for the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance program.
• Collect and record other harvest information (i.e., species, age, and sex of harvested animals).
• Maintain and post signage on the Department’s Access Yes enrolled properties.
• Communicate effectively with landowners, sports persons, and Department personnel.
• Assist regional personnel with coverage during hunting season, particularly on Department-administered lands.
• Assist with wildlife research efforts and data management, as needed.
• Perform work during the day or night with an irregular work schedule.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: 

Preference may be given to those with a four-year college degree in wildlife management, range management, or another natural resource field. Other related training and experience will be evaluated.

**Agency requires the successful applicant to possess a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE: 

• Skill in the safe use of handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pyrotechnical devices.
• Skill in interpersonal communications with employees, landowners, and the general public.
• Ability to record and manage data.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and to be self-directed.
• Knowledge of wildlife management concepts, principles, and practices.
• Well-developed communication skills (written and oral).
• Knowledge of general outdoor skills.
• Skill in the use of GPS and reading maps.
• Ability to positively work with and facilitate relationships with the ranching and hunting communities and other interested individuals as a team.
• Ability to use small power and non-power hand tools
• Ability to safely operate a 4-wheel drive pickup, ATV, and snowmobile in various terrain and road conditions.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain, often during long periods.
• Ability to walk in rough, uneven terrain with unstable footing.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, early mornings, and late evenings.
• Will be required to work alone in the field in a rural setting.
• Ability to use small power and non-power hand tools.
• Able to safely operate a 4-wheel drive pickup, ATV, and snowmobile in various terrain and road conditions.
• Travel and overnight stays may be required, including camping.
