UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, their rights
The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does – in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an equal opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favouritism.
One strategy of driving significant impacts for the most vulnerable and excluded children, is to promote use of more robust data, which unmasks disparities, to reach those furthest behind first. Right data is required at the right time to inform right decisions about the realization of child rights.
The Planning, Monitoring, and Research (PMR) section is the custodian of data at the Jordan Country Office. The PMR section seeks to recruit national Data and Analytics interns who are interested to enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments, while being exposed to UNICEF’s mission, as well as learning on child rights and equity issues. The internship programme is also expected to develop interns’ capacity on generating robust child data and evidence. The interns will be expected to collaborate with sectoral teams ensuring relevance, accuracy, completeness, timeliness and consistency of data and information on children and adolescents. Through learning and practical application, the interns will contribute to the organizational objective of strengthening the demand, supply and use of data for decision making.
How can you make a difference?
UNICEF generates evidence on the situation of children by supporting the collection, analysis, visualization and use of robust data and statistics to improve programming on health, nutrition, education, child protection, water, sanitation and hygiene, social policy, social protection, as well as cross-cutting areas of gender, climate change, disability, adolescent participation, early childhood development and migration.
Under the overall guidance of the supervisor, the Data and Analytics interns will be assigned to support programme sections and cross-cutting areas with data collection, analysis and visualization. The specific learning and developmental assignments will revolve around developing digital data collection tools, collecting, cleaning, processing and analyzing as well as visualizing data. In addition, the data interns will also learn via analysis and synthesis of field monitoring reports and desk review of research articles to produce actionable insights for decision making.
The objectives of this internship are:
The primary purpose of the internship programme will be to support the development and enhancement of the interns’ professional experience through practical work assignments, to expose the interns to UNICEF’s mission, as well as well as to promote learning on child rights, in general.
The data and analytics internship will have the following specific objectives:
The Data and Analytics interns will directly report to the Planning and Monitoring Specialist. The interns will also update the Planning and Monitoring Specialist and Chief of PPM on progress of learning and development work assignments during regular meetings.
Together with the supervisor, a monthly work plan will be developed, which will indicate key activities, deliverables, and performance indicators, clearly specifying deadlines. The internship is expected to be on full-time basis. The interns will be required to submit monthly reports to the supervisor which will also be shared with respective sections to which they are assigned. The monthly report will summarize the learning objectives achieved in conformity with the internship work assignments.
Supervision and guidance will be provided on a day-to-day basis, and regular meetings will be organized to discuss progress and challenges. The intern will be exposed to learning and personal development opportunities within UNICEF and with the partners, including humanitarian response, and will be exposed to learn new developments in the application of big data and analytics to advance child rights and promote equity.
