BACKGROUND
ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.

The salary for this position is up to $1400 per month depending on experience and skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

The Data and Research Manager will lead and actively participate in data collection, analysis, and reporting activities related to wildlife trade and timber seizures in Vietnam, using TRAFFIC’s established methodology to the local context. This role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in report writing, expertise in data analysis and mapping tools, as well as team leadership and hands-on implementation abilities. This position will manage a small team while also conducting research, collaborating with other departments, and reporting directly to the Office Director.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Implement TRAFFIC’s established research methodologies for physical and online market surveys on illegal wildlife trade and timber seizures, ensuring effective application within the Vietnamese context.
• Lead a small team of researchers and analysts, providing guidance and mentorship while actively participating in research activities.
• Conduct and oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting processes, ensuring high-quality outputs and adherence to deadlines.
• Utilize and guide team members in using advanced analytical tools and GIS mapping software to identify trends and patterns in wildlife trade and timber seizures data specific to Vietnam.
• Author, contribute to, and review technical reports, including monthly illegal wildlife trade summaries, analytical studies, and strategic recommendations for senior management.
• Manage and optimize databases (including WiTIS and iBase) to ensure accurate and up-to-date information on trade-related enforcement actions in Vietnam.
• Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to align research efforts with organizational goals and contribute to strategic initiatives.
• Lead and participate in capacity building and knowledge sharing initiatives within the team and across the organization, focusing on Vietnam-specific challenges and opportunities.
• Develop and manage research budgets and contribute to grant writing activities for Vietnam-based projects.
• Stay abreast of emerging trends in wildlife trade research and data analysis methodologies, suggesting adaptations to TRAFFIC’s methodology when appropriate for the Vietnamese context.
• Represent the organization at conferences, workshops, and meetings related to wildlife trade research and data analysis in Vietnam and the region.
• Manage fieldwork and data collection activities as needed, alongside team members
• Undertake additional tasks as request by Office Director.

SUPERVISION
• Small Research and Analysis team (1-3 staff members)
• Consultants as required
