Duties and Responsibilities
This position is located in the Office of the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, in the Technical Team of the Global Crisis Response Group. Under the direct supervision of the lead data scientist and the overall supervision of the Senior Coordinator, and within delegated authority, the consultant will be responsible for: – Supporting and furthering the team’s existing date projects; – Researching potential future projects, including, but not limited to: the development and creation of a media perception dataset and index, and the creation of economic indicators from satellite imagery and geospatial data; – Identifying trends and patterns in data on the effects of the global crisis on food, energy and finance on the world economy and particularly developing countries; – Assessing the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques; – Developing custom data models, algorithms, and economic models to apply to data sets of the GCRG, and maintaining comprehensive and well-structured documentation of algorithms, models, and code; – Maintaining and organizing the databases needed or generated by the Technical Team.
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in economics, statistics, data science or similar field, is required. At least 6 years experience of working with data analysis, economic modelling, or economic analysis in a professional or academic setting is required. Proficiency in a statistical programming language, preferably R, and a data science programming language, preferably Python is required. Additional experience with SQL, Git, R Markdown and Jupyter Lab is desirable.
