Summary
This role is a great opportunity to be a key player in landscape scale deer management in the
beautiful, but challenging, Lake District National Park.
We are looking for someone with the experience to lead our dedicated team of stalkers and
deliver a professional approach to deer management.
Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week. Hours are flexible – no fixed shifts,
but will include some early mornings and evening work, and possibly sometimes at weekends
Salary: £32,000 to £35,000pa depending on your experience
Contract: Permanent

What it’s like to work here
You’ll be part of the Trust’s internal consultancy: a flexible resource of specialist skills
and expertise. As one of a multidisciplinary team of experts, including curators, fundraisers,
building surveyors and project managers, you’ll be working with others to help make things
happen.
You’ll be working across our extensive portfolio of land, engaging with colleagues in the
countryside management teams and specialists from our internal consultancy, along with
volunteer stalkers, tenants, neighbours and external stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be responsible for all aspects of deer management, including Leadership and management
of 30 unpaid contract stalkers and 2 deer larders. This entails ensuring compliance with Health
and Safety, animal welfare and internal policy. You’ll oversee population and census modelling,
setting and delivery of cull targets, based on survey and monitoring data.
You’ll manage and deliver our Countryside Stewardship WS1 Deer Management schemes in the Lakes,
including writing Deer Management Plans and ensuring impact assessments and enclosure plot
monitoring data is compliant with FC requirements.
You’ll engage with a range of stakeholders including Deer Management Groups, Forestry
Commission Deer Officer and Cumbria Firearms Licencing. You’ll work with our tenants and
neighbours and be a key member of Lakes Wildlife Control Group, providing support and expert
advice on firearms and deer issues.
