The British Embassy in Kyiv is recruiting an experienced Defence Liaison Officer.
What is this role all about?
The job holder’s main effort is to support the Defence Attaché and Defence Section in order to engage with and deliver the Military Co-operation Plan on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) for Ukraine.
Main purpose of the role:
- Liaison with Departments and Units of the Ministry of Defence of and Armed Forces of Ukraine as required.
- Liaison with Departments of other Ukrainian authorities as required.
- Act as interpreter for the Defence Attaché and UK-based visitors during meetings with Government and Military officials of Ukraine and others as required.
- Accurate translation of documents from Ukrainian to English and English to Ukrainian as required.
- Make travel and accommodation arrangements for Defence Section and UK based visitors as required.
- Make travel arrangements for official delegations travelling from Ukraine to UK.
- Oversee course administration to UK and other countries.
- Support other members of Defence Section and deputise as required for Senior Liaison Officer as required.
- Process flight diplomatic clearances and border crossing requests.
- Other tasks as requested by Senior Defence Section Liaison Officer and other Defence Section members.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1
- Proficiency in English and Ukrainian (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- Min 5 years of previous administrative and work experience in an international environment;
- Min 5 years of previous work experience in dealing with government officials;
- Understanding of local Ukrainian Government departments;
- Be able to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines, without compromising the quality of work;
- Have strong organisational and communication skills;
- To be IT literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook).

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Working patterns: This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (35 hours net) per week. The core working hours are 08:30 – 16:30, Monday to Friday. However, due to the nature of the work there may a requirement to work in the evenings and at weekends, and on Embassy holidays. In this case TOIL will be granted in accordance with FCDO policy.
The start date mentioned in the advert is just an expected start date. The appointment can start earlier or later depending on several factors.

Learning and development opportunities: Political work is currently expected to take up no more than 20% of the role, but depending on the jobholder’s aptitude and interest, there may be opportunities to expand this.
