Denali Education Manager

The Education Manager is responsible for oversight and management of all aspects of Alaska Geographic’s educational programming and partnership operations at the Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) in Denali National Park and Preserve. This complex position entails overseeing a diverse array of fee-based and free educational programs, co-managing the MSLC facility and related field camps, providing business support for multiple areas of the National Park Service, and ensuring that Alaska Geographic provides safe and high-quality services and strong partnership support to Denali National Park and Preserve. The Education Manager uses flexibility and creativity to continually adapt how Alaska Geographic can remain invaluable to the National Park Service’s (NPS) evolving needs.

The core objective of the Education Manager is to run a revenue-positive operation that provides science and stewardship learning opportunities in Denali National Park and Preserve. The principal duties include program development, oversight and evaluation, facility management, risk management, financial management, partnership relations, and staff supervision. All programs are approved by and managed in close collaboration with National Park Service staff. The Education Manager reports to Alaska Geographic’s Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Manage all Alaska Geographic education programs in Denali National Park.
• Oversee the creation of diverse fee-based and free education programs and develop grants in coordination with NPS.
• Supervise 6-10 operations staff (seasonal) in total, in addition to operations assistants and interns.
• Annual budget development for MSLC Programs in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer and Anchorage-based Education Director
• Closely manage the program operations within budgetary constraints and ensure adequate revenue-generating results. Budget management includes tracking, forecasting, and adjusting activities when necessary.
• Identify short and long-term assets required to perform program objectives efficiently while following purchasing protocols.
• Provide reporting and updates to the Chief Operating Officer
• Work closely with the National Park Service and be responsive to their requests for the Alaska Geographic partnership.
• Cultivate and maintain strong community ties and partnerships.
• Create and/or coordinate updates on activities related to the Murie Science and Learning Center. Promote Alaska Geographic’s operations regularly through meetings, presentations, and marketing materials.
• Assist partner parks throughout the state when appropriate.
• Curate the creation and growth of the new winter-season outreach efforts in the Fairbanks region. Nurture the program and seek opportunities to grow into a financially independent revenue-neutral (or positive) education operation.

Desired Qualifications Include:

• Minimum of five years experience in science-based education, interpretation, educational program delivery, and program management.
• Proven ability to envision, plan, evaluate, and implement innovative fee-based educational programs and services.
• Proven managerial experience and excellent supervisory abilities.
• Experience managing a budget of at least $500,000. Significant experience working in partnerships with non-profit organizations, public agencies, for-profit businesses, and other partners.
• Minimum three years experience working for or in close partnership with a government agency.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to work in a team setting and toward a common goal in close collaboration with the National Park Service and other partners.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, public administration, land management, environmental science, or related field.

· Denali or Alaska living and working experience preferred.

· Current Wilderness First Responder certification or ability to obtain certification before or soon after beginning the position.

· Position subject to a background investigation.

· Valid driver’s license.

· United States citizenship.

The Education Manager is a full-time, year-round position with the potential of up to one month of unpaid leave by negotiation. Year-round residency in the Denali National Park area is required. Long-term housing is provided. Compensation includes a generous benefits package and a salary commensurate with applicable experience.

Pay: $65,000.00 – $70,000.00 per year
