Department Chair – Cariology & Operative Dentistry

• Lead and implement a departmental strategic vision to position IUSD as an international innovator and leader in cariology and operative dentistry, aligned with vision and goals of the IUSD Strategic Plan 2025;
• Recruit, retain and develop, faculty, students, residents, and professional staff who advance the department’s strategic vision;
• Ensure departmental academic, clinical, and research programs, services, and activities remain aligned and compliant with CODA Standards;
• Provide programmatic oversight of pre-doctoral, allied dental and post-doctoral education;
• Nurture and sustain a culture that promotes faculty and staff continuous professional development and lifelong learning;
• Maintain an environment of inclusive excellence, in which students, faculty and staff of all backgrounds and aspirations feel and know they belong;
• Ensure all IUSD compliance expectations are met by the department’s faculty, staff and students;
• Practice and promote ethical and equitable fiscal stewardship;
• Lead by example to remain actively committed to one’s professional and personal development.

IUSD offers a dynamic learning environment for faculty, in which teaching, research, clinical care, and community service are core to our mission, through clinical programs in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana. Our main facility includes a state-of-the-art 45,000–square-foot James J. Fritts DDS Clinical Care Center on the IUPUI campus and is both adjacent to local hospitals and part of an urban academic health center. We deliver a wide range of services and outreach to more than 20,000 patients per year. We enroll approximately 800 students annually in degree and/or certificate programs in dentistry, allied dental programs, PhD, and advanced dental specialty programs tailored to current and future needs of the professions and the communities we serve. The IU School of Dentistry educates 80% of the dentists practicing in Indiana. Over 12,000 of our alumni are pursuing careers throughout the US and around the world.

• A professional record of scholarship, teaching and service which fulfill the requirements for a tenured associate or full professor at Indiana University School of Dentistry
• DDS or DMD degree from a CODA-accredited program or equivalent
• Eligibility for and attainment of an Indiana dental license by the hire start date
• Five or more years academic leadership experience.
• Demonstrated strengths in leading and managing people, including mentoring and coaching of faculty, staff, residents and students
• A highly collaborative leadership style
• Documented success in leading strategic initiatives
• Proven record of creating and maintaining inclusive and diverse teams

• Formal advanced education at the Master’s or Doctoral level (PhD) in cariology, operative dentistry, health economics, health administration public health, or a related field
• Formal leadership education
• National or international recognition as a scholar and thought leader within the dental profession
