About the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Division

The Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Division works in partnership with the Aboriginal community, health and wellbeing sector and governments to achieve a health and wellbeing system that is equitable, culturally safe and driven by Aboriginal self-determination.

The division drives, coordinates and advises on policy, strategic reform and service design to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria. It works from a strengths-based approach to provide support, advice and a cultural lens within the department in the management of community focused, complex and culturally sensitive issues.

About the role

This role will provide senior advice and leadership to drive the delivery of key Aboriginal health and wellbeing priority initiatives and system reform, including supporting the Treaty process for the department.

The role will provide specialist knowledge, public health advice, sector and inter-sector leadership on critical strategies and represents the department at all levels of government, across the health and wellbeing, and Aboriginal community-controlled sectors. The role will identify opportunities through strategic insight and forward planning, system mapping and the utilisation of health system levers to enact change.

About you

You have a background in business administration, a health discipline or within public policy. You have the ability to lead and inspire your team, aligning them with the organisation values and goals. Your deep cultural knowledge and expertise enables you to provide high quality business intelligence. Authoritative advice and sound policy recommendations to senior management and government, grounded in thorough research and engagement with Aboriginal health stakeholders.

You have a strong understanding of leveraging State Government mechanisms to implement culture and change management initiatives. Your efforts will focus on improving and strengthening health system structures and advancing Aboriginal self-determination, cultural safety and collective impact.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Cultural knowledge and expertise including the ability to identify emerging issues, trends and potential risks that impact upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  2. Demonstrated high level experience and understanding of working collaboratively with Aboriginal organisations and communities.
  3. A strong understanding of the Victorian health system, and knowledge of the department and its operating processes and information systems is essential.
  4. Capability to lead critical inter-government and sector policies and strategies to improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal Victorians.
  5. Excellent stakeholder engagement skillset with a proven ability to establish and maintain relationships with people across all levels.
  6. Strong political acumen with the ability to operate proactively in an ambiguous environment.
