Position description

Living Goods (LG) is a leading non-profit organization innovatively transforming the health of vulnerable communities. We support networks of trusted community health workers (CHWs) to transform health outcomes for women and children, and work to advance system change by partnering with governments to sustainably lead. We focus on ensuring CHWs are treated as essential health workers who should be digitized, equipped, supervised and compensated—so they can make the greatest impact—and harnessing community-level data to transform health systems. We focus on treating some of the deadliest but most easily treatable deadly childhood diseases, supporting women of reproductive age with pregnancy support and family planning, and ensuring every child is fully vaccinated. At the end of 2020, Living Goods was supporting more than 11,000 CHWs in Kenya and Uganda to deliver care to more than 8.5 million people.

Living Goods’ strategic plan focuses on the next frontier of impact: enabling government partners to improve health outcomes nationally, by ensuring CHWs can reach their full potential. Building on our unique experience supporting more than 12,000 CHWs to deliver quality health care to more than 9 million people, this plan focuses on ensuring high-quality, digitally enabled community health care can be professionalized and scaled more sustainably, in more countries—saving and improving more lives.

The Opportunity:

Living Goods seeks an experienced Deputy Director of Bi and Multilaterals with a strong network within the US government and bi/multilateral institutions. This role involves leading a dedicated team of fundraising professionals and expanding our portfolio of institutional funders to advance our mission.

This role will be responsible for securing new business and deepening and growing existing bi and multilateral partnerships. The Deputy Director will play a key role in identifying, cultivating, and engaging a wide range of stakeholders, working closely with our colleagues across the US, Europe and Africa. We seek someone with a strong track record of securing significant multi-year and multi-million dollar funding from some of the world’s largest donors (USAID, FCDO, GAC, GF, GAVI).

Living Goods has been very successful in fundraising, growing from $10M revenue in 2016 to $30M in 2020, the organization’s most successful fundraising year to date. We are seeking to grow the diversity of funding from a reliance on foundations and corporates, to more sustainable and larger pots of institutional funding.

The Deputy Director will liaise with the Director, Business Development and other LG leadership in some of their resource mobilisation efforts, will lead on identification and pursuit of new bi and multilateral funding opportunities, will manage their own targeted portfolio of prospects and donors, and serve as the organizational lead for details related to bi and multilateral fundraising.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the GMT to ensure their active engagement in bi/multilateral fundraising processes both during and outside of the proposal development process

Manage the Bi and Multilateral Sub-Team

  • Oversee all operations and personnel of the bi and multi sub-team.
  • Support direct reports on implementation of the bi and multilateral fundraising strategy
  • Provide oversight/guidance and review proposals developed by other team members
  • Develop, update and use key tools to facilitate standardization of BD systems and processes (e.g. standard operating procedures for bid development, bid/no-bid decision templates, donor visit processes)

Thought Leadership and External Representation

  • Attend key external facing conferences and events to increase Living Goods visibility and make new contacts with potential donors
  • Lead the planning and implementation of donor trips to the field in Kenya and Uganda (with support from the BD team members in Uganda and Kenya)
  • Provide high-level strategic support to Health Financing Managers in Ke/Ug on key health financing initiatives including community health investment case development, district/county level budgeting/work planning support, and government contracting

  • Entrepreneurial spirit. You are a forward thinker who enjoys formulating new strategies, solving problems, and thinking about new and better ways to do things internally and externally. You thrive in a medium sized organization and fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding people skills. You bring a demonstrated ability to connect easily with and influence a wide range of individuals from different backgrounds, cultures and levels. You have experience building trusting and productive relationships with a wide range of colleagues, leaders, consultants and other partners.
