Job Description and Duties

The Deputy Director, Chief of Law Enforcement, CEA B, under the general direction of the Director and Chief Deputy Director, develops, implements, and evaluates CDFW policies, procedures, programs, and activities relating to law enforcement issues regarding public safety, homeland security, species and habitat take, and enforcement issues associated with hunting, sport and commercial fishing, marine, and aquaculture programs statewide; oversees and provides policy guidance to the Division; directs the activities of enforcement employees statewide; and serves on the Department’s Executive Team.

Additionally, the Deputy Director, Chief of Law Enforcement:

  • Serves as the top peace officer employee of the Department.
  • Promotes CDFW’s commitment to and accountability for the preservation and protection of the State’s resources through fair and consistent application of laws and responsiveness to the public.
  • Directs strategies and tactics to ensure credible CDFW response to mutual aid, emergency response, and homeland security.
  • Utilizes strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to ensure continuing team development within the Division, CDFW, and constituency groups and inspires the use of these skills by staff.
  • Works with other State, Federal and local government agencies, private organizations, and constituent groups to strategically develop and implement CDFW’s law enforcement and conservation policies and programs.
  • Manages Division programs within fiscal resources and develops strategies to improve budget efficiency and alternative funding sources.
  • Represents CDFW on high-level task forces and committees, before the legislature and the Fish and Game Commission, and at conferences and meetings with various governmental and constituent organizations related to law enforcement.
  • Achieves the goals and objectives of CDFW’s strategic plan.

Working Conditions

The incumbent is a Work Week Group E employee and is expected to work an average of 40 hours per week each year and may be required to work specified hours based on the business needs of the office. The incumbent works in an office setting, with artificial light and temperature control. Daily access to and use of a personal computer and telephone is essential. Sitting and standing requirements in the office are consistent with office work. The incumbent must be able to function under changing priorities and timelines. Ability to speak in public is essential. Attend and present materials at meetings, legislative, and/or committee hearings; direct the work of LED staff. Occasional travel may be required.
