Organisation Background

Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is an international non-governmental organisation that supports humanitarian aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

INSO provides daily support to more than 1,000 NGOs operating in 16 of the world’s most insecure countries.

INSO is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands- the international city of peace and justice.

Sudan Analysis and support team – hosted by INSO Kenya.

INSO Kenya was founded as a standard NGO safety platform in 2012. In 2018, it transformed into the monitoring mission now integrated into INSO’s Horn of Africa program.

INSO is currently upscaling its services in Sudan. The Sudan analysis and support team based in Nairobi will assist NGOs working in the volatile Sudan context with reports, analysis, and advice. The support team includes all the reporting and analysis departments and the support team (finance, logistics, Human resources) and will coordinate closely with NGOs and safety managers in the field.

Working for INSO support team to Sudan will allow you to experience this complex environment while you support humanitarian efforts to address the challenges Sudan faces.

We are now hiring a Deputy Director. This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Country Director, you oversee all aspects of service delivery and play a key role in ensuring that INSO provides the best support possible to NGOs through services to beneficiaries in the regional security environment. Specific responsibilities include implementation and monitoring of service delivery, management of the program team, and support to broader program strategy development and implementation. The Deputy Director covers for the Country Director during leave.

Major Responsibilities

Programme Management

  • Direct management of the program team in Sudan, Kenya, and Chad as appropriate, including recruitment, training, orientation, appraisal, and on-the-job mentoring.
  • Managing the program during Country Director’s absence.
  • Lead and encourage INSO country programme team to generate coherence among services (i.e.: programmes, operations, HQ).

Service Delivery

  • Editorial responsibility for bi-weekly analytical reports and weekly incident lists.
  • Supervision and quality assurance of all other aspects of INSO service delivery, including the Conflict and Humanitarian Data Center (CHDC), 24/7 flash reporting, safety and access roundtable meetings, analytical reports, crisis management support, training sessions, etc.
  • Actively participate in safety and security coordination groups (CMCOORD) and other access challenges discussions
  • Generate learning from INSO’s partners safety and access challenges or specific needs and ensure that these are coherently reflected into all services.

Support to Program Strategy

  • Support the program development and implementation – including the start-up of new field offices — and be involved in the annual planning process, strategy development, and scheduled donor reporting (in the absence of the CD).
  • Deputize for the CD in their absence.
  • Develop and implement internal security management policy, SOPs, and guidelines.
  • Support the application of INSO global policy in areas including HR, finance and operations.

Essential

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Graduate-level education in a relevant field.
  • Significant experience in insecure/conflict-affected environments with progressive seniority.
  • Proven writing, editing, and analytical skills and a keen eye for detail – the position entails substantial report editing and reviewing.
  • Acceptance and strong understanding of humanitarian principles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of humanitarian safety practices and their applications.
  • Significant leadership and staff management experience in multi-cultural settings.
  • Excellent networking, diplomatic, and representative communication skills.

Desired

  • Working knowledge of Arabic.
  • Detailed understanding of INSO mandate & services.
  • Experience in staff capacity development and training.
  • Experience with NGO project management, including donor reporting and relations.
  • First-hand experience of crisis management.
  • Existing information networks and/or local language skills.

Terms & Conditions:

12-month renewable contract, €5,750 per month salary, 4 calendar days annual leave per month and 3 calendar days of R&R every 3 months, housing allowance and global medical coverage (excluding USA), and AD&D insurance.
