Position description

The Women’s Rights Division (WRD) of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Director) to ensure the highest standards of research and advocacy, develop and implement the division’s strategy in collaboration with the WRD team, liaise with other parts of the organization, raise funds in support of the division, and help manage an increasingly growing staff focused on women’s rights with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion; stress and resilience; and encouraging a healthy work/life balance.

Our approach is deeply intersectional: we explicitly and intentionally look at how intersecting inequalities—based on gender, race, ethnicity, caste, nationality, Indigenous status, migration status, socio-economic status, sexual orientation and gender identity, ability, age, and other factors—contribute to marginalization and human rights violations. We work in partnership with local organizations in areas such as reproductive, economic and climate justice; economic, social and cultural rights; political rights, racial justice and reparations; violence, access to health, LGBT rights; and workers’ rights.  

The Deputy will report to the Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Division and will be, preferably, based in an HRW office in the Global South, ideally Kenya or Brazil, with other locations considered. 

The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely but will be expected to work from the office 2 days a week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities 

1. Provide day-to-day management and leadership of the WRD, supervising staff, and supporting an environment of collaborative work;

2. Guide and advance work on women’s rights, supporting the Division with the design of strategic projects and development and editing of its different products; 

3. Work with the WRD Executive Director and HRW’s Development and Outreach Department in identifying and cultivating new fundraising opportunities for the WRD work; 

4. Implement with the WRD its multi-year strategy and a plan to advance our work on women’s rights with a focus on the three main pillars of WRD’s work: economic autonomy, Sexual and reproductive justice, and sexual and gender based violence;

5. Act as a senior representative and advocate for the work of the division internally;

6. Act as a senior spokesperson and liaise with external actors to advocate on the work of the division;

7. Develop and strengthen collaborations between the Division and local organizations; and

8. Undertake other responsibilities as required. 

 

Managerial Responsibilities:

1. Lead, motivate, and mentor direct reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care;

2. Assist the Executive Director in establishing clear work plans and manage workload for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively. Provide oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignments;

3. Assist the Executive Director in ensuring that the management, staffing, and culture of the division are suitably aligned with evolving goals, and strategic ambitions;

4. Assist the Executive Director in managing the implementation of performance management processes that measure and evaluate progress against operational goals for the division;

5. Promote an inclusive, creative, and positive work environment including by soliciting diverse points of views, encouraging staff to participate in efforts to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc.;

 

Qualifications

Education: An advanced degree (graduate) or an equivalent level of experience in women’s rights, law, journalism, social sciences, international affairs, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of experience of relevant work experience with at least four (4) years in a leading management role.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Track record of measurable success executing complex projects and teams, managing budgets, implementing operational change, conducting monitoring and evaluation, and ensuring high-quality deliverables is required.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required. Fluency in a second language is a plus.

3. Knowledge of international human rights law and international humanitarian law are required

4. Ability to edit documents for factual and legal accuracy, bringing a gender perspective into review processes and project design. documents provide analysis with a gender perspective in human rights.

5. Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with partner organizations, government officials, private companies and other interlocutors are required.

6. Ability to multi-task effectively, adjust to changing priorities, and meet deadlines is required.

7. Optimism, a sense of humor, and excitement about joining a skilled and diverse team is required.

8. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and experience applying DEI values in the workplace is required.

 

Salary and Benefits:  HRW offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits. HRW offers a relocation assistance package and will assist employees in obtaining necessary work authorization, if required; citizens of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. If based in the United States, the salary range would be USD 121,000– 133,00. Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
