The German Insurance Association (GDV) is the umbrella organisation of insurers in Germany. We represent the interests of an exciting, efficient and diverse industry vis-à-vis parliament, government and the public – at national, EU and international levels.
For our EU and International Department, we are looking for an ambitious and engaging Deputy Head of European and International Affairs in Brussels, Belgium. As part of the EU and International Affairs team of GDV, the Deputy Head of EU and International Affairs will be an essential part of our team representing the interests of our members towards EU and international institutions, supervisors and other stakeholders.
The Deputy Head of EU and International Affairs will join an ambitious and young team in Brussels. The role reports to the Head of EU and International Affairs.

Your task profile
- Monitoring and gathering intelligence on political developments of relevant to the insurance industry;
- Analysing developments on a range of EU and international policy initiatives and the wider public debate on insurance in Germany;
- Reporting regurlarly internally and to members;
- Leading on the position-building process on policy initiatives;
- Draft briefing and information materials for political and public debate;
- Promoting the aims and objectives of GDV and help secure the outcomes and deliverables set out in the GDV Strategy;
- Supporting the development of the association’s regulatory and policy positions, advising on appropriate advocacy measures and engagement strategies;
- Managing and extending the association’s network and stakeholder engagement;
- Organising and plan meetings with government officials, EU institutions, regulators, supervisors and other stakeholders at EU and international level including EU Member States other than Germany, coordinate responses to stakeholder letters and inquiries on matters relating to insurance;
- Assisting in managing the EU and International Affairs team;
- Undertaking all duties in line with GDV’s policies and procedures and all its legal obligations such as other duties as may reasonably be required by GDV.
Your Skillset
- Minimum 5 years of experience in advocacy, public affairs, communication or another relevant field of activity;
- University level education or equivalent practical experience in law, economics, politics or international relations;
- Deep knowledge of political processes, strategic and regulatory aspects;
- Interest in understanding strategic and regulatory issues in financial services and insurance;
- Enthusiasm for building and managing effective and positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, at all levels across a range of organisations;
- Very good analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to identify key issues and synthesise feedback;
- Great project management skills and ability to organise and plan to tight deadlines;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Ability to work flexibly in a small, close knit, multi-tasking team; working with colleagues and on own initiative with minimal supervision;
- Proactive, organised, and self-motivated to manage workload and meet agreed & sometimes competing deadlines;
- Fluent written and spoken German and English;
- Excellent interpersonal, communication & networking skills with the ability to communicate & collaborate with people & stakeholders at all levels;
- Proactive and positive with a team-player attitude and hands-on approach.
