Background

The Global Methane Hub (GMH) is the first coordinated philanthropic approach to methane mitigation funding. We support ambitious catalytic investments, lay the groundwork for long-term transformation of challenging sectors, and deliver quick wins in sectors that are ripe for action on the ground. GMH focuses on the energy, agricultural, and waste sectors which account for 96% of human-caused methane emissions.

Our actions are global in nature but believe quick wins will only be had if we engage sub-nationals and local communities. Our grant making focuses on the highest emitting sectors and regions with a team spread out in six continents and is headquartered in Santiago, Chile.

Purpose of role

In the last two years, GMH has grown dramatically, with the new position of Deputy Program Director, Energy being an essential position with a growing team. This role will aid the Program Director – Energy in designing a portfolio of grants, managing the Energy team, and representing GMH with external partners.

The Deputy Program Director will bring technical expertise in the energy sector and will serve as a thought partner to and collaborator with the Program Director. This role will work with other GMH teams to support organizational goals as needed, and with external partners including funders, grantees, and the methane ecosystem.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

Program delivery and performance

  • Manage and monitor results-based grant making portfolios of the Energy program, including implementing the theory of change, establishing clear goals, and monitoring applicable metrics.
  • Work with the Program Director to enable the timely use of evidence to support program design and develop/deliver effective verification and evaluation systems.
  • Assist in developing an annual operational plan, to ensure effective in-year prioritization of resources and activities.
  • Undertake initial screening of potential grantees; manage grantee relationships; analyze and assess background information; conduct site visits; solicit and develop funding proposals; determine appropriate funding levels; prepare docket materials; monitor active grants and review progress reports.
  • Ensure adherence to internal grant making processes via appropriate documentation, grant budgeting, and reporting.

Sector knowledge and profile-building

  • Establish and maintain networks with experts and opinion formers within the international climate change and methane mitigation community to identify potential grantees and ensure decision-making is shaped by up-to-date insights and research.
  • Monitor developments in the field to identify emerging needs, gaps, and opportunities.
  • Undertake or commission sector-relevant research and analysis to inform the effective development, delivery and evaluation of programs and initiatives.

External relations

  • Maintain a cordial working relationship with government officials to build new commitments on methane mitigation, including participation in the Global Methane Pledge and other multilateral commitments.
  • Support the Program Director in engaging with the community of aligned donors and practitioners working to advance the goals of the GMH.
  • Represent Global Methane Hub at conferences and meetings with NGOs, funders, experts, and consultants; ensure follow-up, as needed. This will include international and domestic travel.

Financial stewardship and team management

  • Support the development of an annual administrative budget to anticipate and plan for programmatic expenses.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to program staff.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested.

 

Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred + at least 10 years of experience in the fossil energy methane mitigation space, or a related sector.
  • Excellent project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage complex, $1M+ USD projects and learn quickly.
  • Strong research ability and advanced oral and written communication skills, including presentations.
  • Grant-making experience is required.
  • Highly collaborative with a partnership mindset. Encourages others to share the spotlight and visibly celebrates and supports the success of the team, external partners, and grantees.
  • Intellectual agility and the ability to analyze, think critically, and understand emerging issues and opportunities to reduce methane emissions.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty; the ability to adapt nimbly.
  • Have broad familiarity with the climate change policy landscape at international, regional, national and/or sub-national levels.
  • Hands-on experience in working across geographies with multiple stakeholders, in particular in developing countries.
  • Written and oral fluency in English.
  • Are passionate about being part of the climate change solution.

Hiring Statement

U.S. employees are employed by our fiscal sponsor, the Windward Fund. Windward offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees can enrol in a 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.

Windward participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with employees’ Form I-9 information to confirm authorization to work in the United States. Additional Information

  • This will be a full-time (40 hours/week) remote role and will require time flexibility in order to collaborate with staff and stakeholders in multiple time zones. The position supervisor is in the GMT-4 time zone.
  • Candidates in Asia-Pacific or Europe region strongly preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally at least 25%.
