The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is a nonprofit institution that engages audiences in an ongoing dialogue, in which people of all backgrounds are able to see American history and society through a critical lens, to reflect on their own experiences, and to make meaningful connections between the past and the present, the global and the local, themselves and others. MOCA celebrates the living history of the Chinese experience in America by preserving and presenting the two century-long history, heritage, culture, and diverse experiences of American communities of Chinese descent. As one of “America’s Cultural Treasures,” MOCA is devoted to educating the public on this important history and to inspiring meaningful intercultural dialogues through exhibitions, education, and public programs. Since its founding in 1980, MOCA has evolved from a Chinatown history project in New York City into an ambitious reflection of the whole of Chinese American history, becoming the country’s leading museum of Chinese American history and a global destination.

Development Associate Role

MOCA is seeking an experienced and competent full-time Development Associate. The development associate is responsible for assisting in and supporting fundraising operations and communication efforts at MOCA. They will report directly to the Director of Development and work across and in coordination with various organizational departments. The current MOCA team is a small and growing team, who can work in a fast-paced environment and work cross-functionally with other departments. MOCA staff currently operates on a hybrid schedule, and this role would be required to be on-site three days per week at our museum location in lower Manhattan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

75% Development

  • Provides overall administrative support to support department-related functions.
  • Management of processing checks, and maintaining communications around development needs, amongst others.
  • Management of gift entry and receipt process, ensuring acknowledgement letters are processed promptly.
  • Maintains the accuracy and integrity of donor databases by ensuring that all information is kept current and up to date.
  • Collaborates on event planning and execution, such as our annual gala, journey wall ceremony, golf outing, and other events.
  • Performs basic administrative duties such as filing, data entry, maintaining a filing system, and more.

25% Communications

  • Manage all our social media accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn.
  • Develop, write, and edit marketing and communications materials, including social media content and weekly newsletters.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and database management.
  • Displays excellent time management, attentiveness to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates a professional demeanor whether speaking to donors in person, over the phone, via email, or through letters.
  • Works well alone and under direct supervision.
  • Regular working hours and flexibility in attending occasional development or museum events in the evenings or on weekends.
  • Interest in Asian American Studies, American History, or Asian culture a plus.

This role is full-time, salaried, and exempt from overtime. The salary is $62,400and includes full benefits, including medical, dental, paid time off, and others.
