POSITION SUMMARY
The Development Director position at Breakthrough Miami,
supports the advancement of the organization through increased
funding, with a focus on unrestricted contributions. The Director
will build, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of donors
for annual and multi-year gifts. Core responsibility will be direct
fundraising ($1.5M+) thereby advancing mission, programs, and
impact. The successful candidate will be an effective fundraiser,
authentically committed to mission, able to build meaningful
relationships, and be a strategic, flexible, and positive thinker
responsible for cultivating and closing gifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage a personal portfolio ($2M) and close a minimum of $1.5M
of unrestricted gifts annually - Develop and execute a strategic annual fundraising work plan
and matrix to manage portfolio, goal-setting, and tracking - Build meaningful relationships with individuals and families
with capacity to philanthropically invest in Breakthrough
Miami - Develop, solicit and close multi-year and major unrestricted
gifts - Lead fundraising aspects of annual fundraising events; leverage
events as a vehicle for increased annual and major gifts and
sponsorships, donor entry opportunities and stewardship - Receive and respond to donor inquiries with friendliness and
efficiency - Support awareness and engagement at host site schools among
parents and alumni - Stay abreast of trends, best practices, and strategies in
philanthropy - Support donor stewardship and reporting
- Support alumni network with fundraising initiatives, including
Give Miami Day campaign - Support production of copy for advancement communications
materials, including appeals, donor stewardship posts for social
media, gift reports, and campaign and/or constituent specific
materials. - Represent the organization and be an active participant in the
community through attendance at community events and host site
school functions - Work with Operations Associate to ensure gifts are acknowledged
in a meaningful, timely and accurate fashion, and appropriately
recorded in database - Support monthly and annual reconciliation with Controller
- Collaborate with Controller to issue and track outstanding
pledges - Assist the Chief Philanthropy Officer in creating and
maintaining an Advancement Calendar, fundraising reporting, and
donor engagement/cultivation strategies - Work collaboratively with all staff to achieve Breakthrough
Miami’s mission and goals - Perform other duties that may be assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Dependable and regular attendance with evening and weekend work
is required to fulfill the expectations of the role.
Education &
Experience
- 5-7 years of related job experience
- Proficient in CRM database skills (e.g., Raiser’s Edge,
Salesforce) - High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google
Sheets, Google Docs and PowerPoint
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Proven track record of directly soliciting and closing annual
and major gifts - Knowledge of the gift process and donor cycle
- Knowledge of fundraising reports, tracking and
goal-setting - Possesses strong relationship-building skills, including the
ability to ask questions and make inferences that help understand a
donor’s motivation, and to listen sincerely and effectively - Goal oriented; motivated by achieving individual and group
fundraising goals - Detail oriented with exceptional organizational and
communication skills - Skilled at project management and adept at juggling multiple
deadlines and stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive final
product - Collaborative spirit; motivated and driven to work with the
development team to accomplish team goals while also completing
independent work - Politely persistent
- Able to actively engage in the life of our host site school
communities - Ability to anticipate needs, take initiative, maintain
confidentiality and exercise good judgment - Positive spirit, optimistic attitude, and professional
demeanor - Ability to work in a fast-paced, flexible, team
environment - Big picture thinker who can also pay attention to details
- Proven ability to write donor communications, including appeals
and acknowledgments - Sets high personal standards, follows through on commitments

OTHER SUCCESS FACTORS
- Familiarity with issues of educational equity
- Skilled in social media and other marketing areas
