Job Description

Data Friendly Space, a leading non-profit organization developing IT solutions for the humanitarian sector, seeks a passionate and collaborative DevOps Engineer to join its dynamic Dev team. You will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining reliable and scalable infrastructure for our critical applications, streamlining software delivery pipelines, and fostering a culture of collaboration between development and operations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Infrastructure Management:
    • Design, implement, and manage secure and scalable cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP) for development, staging, and production environments.
    • Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform)
    • Implement Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines using tools like Jenkins or GitLab CI/CD.
    • Monitor and maintain infrastructure health and performance, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
  • Deployment and Release Management:
    • Collaborate with developers to automate deployments of software applications across environments.
    • Implement rollback and disaster recovery strategies.
    • Monitor deployments for errors and performance issues, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Automation and Tooling:
    • Develop and implement automation scripts for routine tasks, including infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and deployments.
    • Research and evaluate new DevOps tools and technologies to improve team efficiency.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with developers, data engineers, and ML engineers to understand their needs and requirements.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration and communication between development and operations teams.
    • Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Essential Skills and Experience:

    • 2+ years of experience as a DevOps Engineer or a related role.
    • Strong understanding of DevOps principles and practices.
    • Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS or GCP preferred).
    • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform.
    • Expertise in CI/CD pipelines and tooling (Jenkins, Github Actions CI/CD preferred).
    • Experience working with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Scripting skills (Bash, Python, etc.).
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Passion for building and maintaining reliable and scalable systems.
    • Experience proposing server and managed service requirements, with an eye for balancing cost vs performance.
    • An understanding for the significance of meta-tasks, such as documentation, infrastructure load testing, etc.
  • Desirable Skills and Experience:

    • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (Prometheus, Grafana, etc.).
    • Preferred experience in MLOps
    • Experience with security best practices in cloud environments.
    • Knowledge of data engineering and NLP technologies (a plus).
    • Experience managing organizational access control (IAM)

Start Date: Immediate

End date: June 30th, 2024; with possible extension

Workload: Full-time (100%)

Compensation: $2,000 per month

Data Friendly Space (DFS) is a 501(c)(3) global non-profit organization with guiding principle to improve information management and analysis capacity, tools, and processes in the humanitarian and development community to enable better informed and more targeted assistance.

DFS staff is composed of experts from the humanitarian information management and analysis field who specialize in real-time secondary data review and build humanitarian applications that support the fast extraction of information from large volumes of unstructured data.

DFS also focuses on the creation of data-centric web applications, websites, and mobile applications to support humanitarian organizations. When building software, DFS focuses on the intersection between data automation processes powered by Artificial intelligence and human knowledge and skills, in particular when one can help the other to execute the analysis.
