Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking a Digital Accessibility Architect with an enthusiasm for digital accessibility, usability, and inclusive design. The architect will report to the Digital Accessibility Program Manager, within the Center for User Experience.

Daily responsibilities will include performing digital accessibility evaluations of digital tools and resources, maintaining a knowledge base of accessibility barriers and detailed alternative access for users, and consultations with campus partners and customers on accessibility needs and questions. Education, training, and production of guide materials will be a component of this role.
This individual will participate during development and procurement of digital tools and resources to evaluate and validate conformance to digital accessibility standards.
Following priorities set by the Digital Accessibility Program Manager, this role will assist in promoting digital accessibility, provide education and guidance, and support development of plans for equal access to the digital ecosystem at the University.

Responsibilities: Assists with research and design of usable and accessible systems, services, and content to support user needs, meet project goals, and advance institutional priorities. Assists in training and outreach efforts to advance the institutional capacity for user-centered practices.
  • 10% Conducts research with users to understand context and needs, utilizing methods such as ethnographic/field research, interviews, usability testing, and surveys
  • 10% Analyzes and synthesizes research data and metrics to inform policy, service, content, and interaction design
  • 25% Assists in the design and execution of training, facilitation, and outreach materials, and researches and designs best practices to promote the use of user-centered, accessible practices at the institution
  • 35% Assists in advising various stakeholders on user-centered and accessible practices
  • 20% Performs technical digital accessibility reviews on digital resources and tools

Education:

Preferred
Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:
– Technical experience working in the field of digital accessibility, with ability to perform evaluations on digital resources and tools developed or procured for use at the University, ensuring compliance with digital accessibility guidelines
– Thorough understanding of WCAG 2.1 standards, with ability to consult with and provide support for customers about digital accessibility and usability best practices during design, content creation, procurement, or development process
– Professional experience creating documentation for digital accessibility barriers reported for digital assets and/or tools
– Professional experience creating training materials, presentations, and/or guides for sharing digital accessibility standards and best practices
– Familiarity with assistive technology, experience using tools used to evaluate digital resources, and knowledge of methods for staying current on digital accessibility standards
In addition to required qualifications, the most qualified candidates may also have the following preferred qualification:
– Experience working in higher education
– Experience remediating documents and/or web sites with accessibility barriers

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
This position is eligible for any of the following: 100% remote work; partial remote work; or fully on-site. Remote work requires an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement. An RWA requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer. Per University policy, transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable and will be at the expense of the employee.

Salary:

Minimum $75,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Starting salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Well qualified applicants can anticipate earning between $75,000 – $90,000, with final salary based on experience and qualifications.
