Love nature—and getting people excited about it? Then you’re going to love The Nat.

The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) was founded by amateur naturalists in 1874 and has played a major role in the conversation of our region. The Museum recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and completed a strategic plan focused on encouraging a love for nature, levering science and collections for conservation, and using our own voice to be here for nature.

The Digital Content Manager at the San Diego Natural History Museum will inspire audiences to explore The Nat’s programs and mission through compelling digital storytelling. This position plays a key support role in the Communications & Marketing Department, creating content that drives attendance, encourages participation in programs and events, and strengthens community connections that support The Nat’s work.

Working in close collaboration with colleagues across the organization, the Digital Content Manager will develop engaging content across digital channels—including the website, social media, email, and other platforms—to build and nurture The Nat’s online community and inspire action among current and prospective visitors, program participants, and supporters.

Part storyteller, part digital strategist, the ideal candidate is a creative writer who can craft compelling narratives that bring science and nature to life, maintain a fresh and dynamic web presence, and cultivate a distinctive brand voice that resonates with diverse audiences. Knowledge of digital analytics and project coordination skills are a plus.

Your Day-to-Day Work

In this role, you will develop and execute engaging content across all digital platforms (website, newsletters, social media channels), keep our online presence fresh and up to date, and collaborate on marketing campaigns for museum programs. You’ll monitor performance metrics to inform content decisions, support community engagement, and stay current with digital best practices.

Primary Responsibilities

Content Development and Writing

  • Contribute to the annual content strategy and editorial plan, lead and/or participate in regular digital content and email planning meetings, and monitor and report on key digital metrics
  • Create and publish creative and engaging social media content, with a focus on visitation and public programs
  • Update web pages with new content,  which includes writing and updating copy, selecting dynamic images, auditing high-visibility pages to ensure they align with content and marketing strategy, and managing the calendar API (event feed)
  • Serve as one of the primary editors for all museum communications, and liaise with other content writers to ensure brand consistency and adherence to written style guide
  • Manage email marketing program: oversee museum-wide enews calendar, write biweekly Nat News (and others as required), and understand/analyze audience metrics

General Communications Support

  • Partner with program managers across the Museum to collaborate on marketing plans and timelines for ongoing initiatives and programs
  • Ensure community calendars and profiles are up to date with current museum events, images, and content
  • Support PR and media outreach efforts where needed, including working with influencers, bloggers, and community partners
  • Support digital advertising efforts, including contributing copy and advising on Google grant priorities

What You Bring

You’ll be an excellent writer and creative content developer who can also think strategically about audience engagement and digital performance. You’ll balance day-to-day content needs with longer-term planning, support the needs of other departments while advancing communications goals, and bring both creative storytelling skills and analytical thinking to the role.

  • Strong writer with a mastery of AP Style who can execute a full editorial strategy
  • Creative content developer with experience producing engaging multimedia content including short-form video, graphics, and visual storytelling across platforms
  • Proficiency with content creation and editing tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms; comfortable with mobile-first content production
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and adapt digital trends for institutional use, translate complex topics into accessible narratives, and develop original content concepts that drive engagement
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to take feedback and manage up
  • Sensitive to the speed required for social and digital content, with a healthy respect for deadlines
  • Experience with content management systems, email marketing programs (MailChimp or similar), and social media scheduling platforms (Buffer, Hootsuite, or similar)
  • High integrity and adherence to brand guidelines
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate across departments
  • 2-4 years of experience in a writing or communications position, or equivalent combination of education and training
  • Knowledge of best practices and evolving trends for digital content and engagement
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus

The Digital Content Manager will report to the Senior Communications Manager and partner with many internal departments, including Education and Engagement, Development, Volunteers, and Visitor Services.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits such as health insurance, vacation, 15 paid holidays, free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums, and more
