The Faculty of Engineering consists of ten departments, and the Ed Tech Lab provides a service to them by supporting teaching staff to deliver an innovative digital and blended education.

As a Digital Media Specialist in the Ed Tech Lab, you will be pivotal in the planning and delivery of a wide variety of Video/audio content. You will collaborate with cross functional staff,combining creative, project management, technical capabilities, and post-production coordination tasks, providing specialist steer during scoping, pre-production, production and post-production.

This role may involve working on cross-college activities and working flexibly to meet requirements, including filming on location.

Whilst the position offers multiple opportunities for further development, it is skilled position for an experienced practitioner

Duties and responsibilities

Design & Delivery

Work closely with Academic Staff/Teaching Fellows and Instructional Designers on projects as main producer, production, coordination, planning and timely delivery of quality media assets.

  • Contribute to module storyboards, work closely with Academic Staff/Teaching Fellows to align content and designs with clear narratives and with instructionally and technically appropriate pedagogy.
  • Ownership of ED Tech labs planning system and protocols , from scoping and consultation, via project / programme scheduling and deployment, to post-production planning and approval process onto long-term storage and adaptation.
  • Following EdTech and DML practices, lead shoots and overseeing production, filming, hardware and spaces to enable a large volume of simultaneous, different types of production
  • Editing audio and video and playing active and pro-active part in the overall post-production pipeline, adhering to all team protocols and processes.
  • Quality Assurance and data verification of assets, groups of assets and server volumes
  • Keep abreast of developments in learning media techniques and technologies within the College,in HE generally and in relevant subject disciplines, to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Promote awareness learning media and experiences best practice across the university

  • Deliver modules within agreed timescales, coordinating activities/media types across the transformation team and escalate as required to Senior Learning Technologist (Transformation). Handover redesigned modules to Academic Staff/Teaching Fellows in line with agreed processes.
  • Overall responsibility for all outputs from the production process whilst organising and maintaining media assets for reuse across modules.

    Evaluation

  • Review final content with the intentions identified in the storyboard/scripts/raw material, to ensure consistency and alignment with the learning design approach and templates, identifying areas for process improvement.
  • Regularly (in conjunction with colleagues from the EdTech Team) evaluate, review and adapt approaches and processes used for video production and Design and content development, sourcing efficient and effective processes.
  • In collaboration with Education, Insight and Evaluation Analyst contribute to reports containing analysis to evaluate, review and inform efficient and effective technology education solutions and instructional evaluation for ‘on-campus’ module designs. Promote, and if appropriate, contribute to research on learning and educational development.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Digital Media Lab, Learning Technologists, ICT, and other colleagues Supporting Senior practitioners with continuous process and workflow assessment and improvement on project, programme and cross-project levels, identifying efficiencies and supporting their tidy rollout and implementation.
  • Personal and professional development

  • In collaboration with colleagues, undertake networking activities, liaising with colleagues in other Faculties, the Digital Media Lab, ICT and the Library to build effective working relationships, generate best practice and share ideas.

  • Essential requirements

    Degree or equivalent qualification preferably in the fields of Instructional Design, Computer Sciences, Media Sciences and/or Education.

    The ideal candidate will have significant experience in producing short form content, filmmaking more generally, video editing, basic camera work and crucially the ability to own relationships and details on media production projects, timelines and workflows. In particular, the post holder would act as key media production point of contact for multiple productions and programmes of work, so the ability to multitask, and manage own and others’ time effectively is a must.

    On the editing side of the position, there needs to be demonstrable experience with editing on Adobe Premier, ideally in the HE sector or in Learning and Development.

    On the Production side of the position candidates should have demonstrable pertinent experience in producing Learning and Development / Academic / science / Factual media content.

    Experience of basic hands-on filming disciplines, such as basic camera operation, would also be required as the job involves hands on filming and editing, alongside producing. Experience with planning larger shoots (drama or documentary) is desirable.
