The CNPS Public Affairs department is a multidisciplinary team focused on external and internal communications, digital strategy, public policy, public engagement, partnerships, and publications. Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Digital Media Specialist is integral to these efforts as both a creative, multimedia content creator, digital technician, and online reputation manager. This position serves as the team’s point person, providing project management across social media and analytics, website production, and digital creative development.  

What You’ll Do  

Social Media Management (40%) 

  • Provide strategic oversight and leadership in developing and implementing social media campaigns. 
  • Via the social media channels, develop collaborations, reinforce partnerships, and strengthen bonds with other organizations to advance our mission and values. 
  • Guide social media best practices for CNPS staff and chapters.  
  • Be responsible for daily content creation across social media channels, strategically aligned with campaign and content calendars. 
  • Produce social media posts, reels, graphics, and other assets in support of content priorities. 
  • Oversee the daily operations and tracking of social media posts on all CNPS platforms. 
  • Monitor social media direct messages, feeds, and comments; respond or triage questions or comments as needed. 
  • Monitor and engage the CNPS Facebook Group, working with dedicated CNPS volunteer admins; develop new group strategies. 
  • Produce monthly reports on social media engagement with analysis and recommendations. 
  • Research and develop strategies to incorporate emerging social media tools, and new content platforms, into an overall multi-channel communications plan. 

Website & Digital Asset Management (35%) 

  • Responsible for CNPS multi-site WordPress account administration. 
  • Provide strategic direction for website development and digital asset management. 
  • Serve as the liaison for CNPS Chapter websites, providing training, support, and solutions for the WordPress platform. 
  • Manage a change request ticket system, providing ongoing website updates as needed in collaboration with staff and contractors. 
  • Lead website improvement projects; make high-level decisions regarding website functionality and digital assets. 
  • Produce and contribute to website content as needed, with a focus on multimedia content. 
  • Develop and manage a digital asset management system for CNPS Public Affairs photos, graphics, and videos. 
  • Source photographs from CNPS staff, volunteers, professional and social networks, documenting and including proper attribution.  

Video and Graphic Design (25%) 

  • In collaboration with team members film, produce, and caption video projects aligned to CNPS campaigns and strategic goals. 
  • Oversee video and graphic design projects, including managing external vendors or contractors, adhering to creative direction, and ensuring alignment with broader communications goals. 
  • Design and produce digital creative assets for CNPS campaigns and public affairs priorities (e.g., infographics, templates for brochures, slides). 

Who You Are 

  • Experienced working daily across programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, social media schedulers, Canva, Asana (and/or other work collaboration platforms).  
  • Experienced user of Google Analytics, social media insights, and sentiment and social listening tools. 
  • Experienced leading and mentoring teams, strategic planning, and high-level decision-making.  
  • Understand the strategic differences between popular social media platforms and how to produce content for each. 
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and priorities. 
  • Possess a curious mind and an ability to identify creative ways to share information and tell stories. 
  • Have a proactive work ethic with a “can-do” attitude; are a self-motivated problem solver and a team player with a strong focus on driving strategic results. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse internal and external partners. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with social media editorial calendars and strategic plans. 
  • Possess strong visual, written, and verbal communication skills. Able to craft and adapt content to a range of formats and audiences. 
  • Have previous online community management experience. 
  • Possess video creation and editing ability with a strong portfolio. 
  • Have advanced project management skills and experience in developing and implementing strategic initiatives. 
  • Have six or more years of relevant communications experience. 

 Nice to Have  

While CNPS recognizes that not every individual will exhibit all these characteristics, the successful candidate will possess at least one – and ideally more than one – of the following: 

  • Expertise in strategic communications within a nonprofit context. 
  • Experience in managing budgets, developing, and implementing policies, and leading cross-functional teams. 
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages spoken in California. 
  • Knowledge of CNPS, familiarity with native plants and plant communities throughout California.  
  • Previous experience working in social media and daily communications with a nonprofit/membership organization. 
  • Live close to, or within a convenient driving distance of, the CNPS HQ in Sacramento, CA. 
     

Physical Requirements  

This job requires prolonged sitting and use of a computer and mouse. It may require participation in field trips on uneven trails with variable grades. Location 
This is a full-time (40-hour week) remote office, at-home position, for residents of California. 

Additional Information  

  • Work hours are typically Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with some flexibility. 
  • A valid California driver’s license is required. 
  • Periodic travel to locations throughout California will be required. (Work travel is reimbursed.)
