Even Ground (www.evenground.org) is a U.S. based 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization focused on providing funding and support to
community-based programs that provide education, nutrition, and
other services for young people and their families in South Africa
with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality. Even
Ground facilitates and enhances the work of our local, in-country
partners by providing them with the support that they’ve identified
as critical to their mission. Through financial, managerial, and
other assistance, Even Ground works to cultivate a network of
support and collaboration between our partners. We are seeking a
dynamic, experienced individual to improve and expand our
fundraising efforts so that we may better enable our partners to
grow and amplify their impact for the children and families they
serve.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director reports to the Even Ground Board of Directors and
serves as the administrative and development director for the
organization. The Director has primary responsibility, in
collaboration with the Board, for planning, implementing, and
evaluating all the organization’s fundraising activities to ensure
the organization is able to meet its goals and be financially
sustainable. In addition, the Director is responsible for the
operations of the organization and the long-term development and
execution of the organization’s mission, strategic plans, and
goals. The Director works closely with the Board and other
volunteers to advance Even Ground’s mission, vision, and values and
ensure the organization is operating in an effective, efficient,
and legal manner.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director shall be responsible for:

  • Serving as Development Director:
    • Plan, implement, and evaluate a strategic fundraising plan in
      collaboration with the Board.
    • Cultivate, leverage, and maintain a donor network with the
      assistance of the Board.
    • Develop strategies for expanding the donor base beyond current
      networks.
    • Seek and obtain financial support through diverse revenue
      streams, focusing primarily on the cultivation of relationships
      with high-net-worth individuals and networks connected to the
      Board.
    • Plan and oversee annual fundraising campaigns and events with
      the assistance of volunteers.
    • Develop a communication plan with current and prospective
      donors.
    • Coordinate with South African organization partners to produce
      relevant and compelling information for distribution to donors and
      for inclusion on the website and social media platforms.

 

 

  • Support of the Officers and Board of
    Directors:

    • Work with the Board to ensure the organization’s mission,
      purpose, and priorities of the organization remain relevant and are
      fulfilled through Even Ground’s support of its partner
      organizations.
    • Provide timely and accurate information necessary for the Board
      to function properly and make informed decisions.
    • Plan and prepare board meeting schedule, structure, and agendas
      in coordination with the Board President.
    • Assist Board officers with the recruitment and orientation of
      new board members.

 

  • Financial and administrative management and
    reporting:

    • Work with the Treasurer and the Board to ensure the fiscal
      integrity and the sound financial management of the
      organization.
    • Prepare annual budget, financial reports, and financial
      forecast in partnership with the Treasurer for presentation to and
      approval of the Board.
    • Oversee development of proper accounting records and
      reconciliations and an annual financial review or audit.
       
    • Prepare or oversee the preparation of all required state and
      federal reporting.
    • Write and implement administrative policies and procedures and
      maintain required organizational records.
    • Take all necessary steps to ensure that Even Ground remains in
      compliance with their obligations under local, state, and federal
      laws.
    • Recruit, orient, and supervise volunteers and, if future funds
      allow, part-time staff to assist with fundraising and
      administrative duties.

 

  • Communicate and coordinate with in-country staff and
    partners:

    • Ensure there is an up-to-date understanding of partner
      organizations’ programming and needs.
    • Ensure partner organizations’ programs align with Even Ground’s
      mission.
    • Ensure there is adequate and effective communication between
      all the parties involved in our work and everyone is working
      towards the same goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management,
international development, business management, or a relevant field
is required.

 

Experience: A minimum of five years progressively responsible
non‐profit experience, including experience in the area of
development are required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nonprofit development principles and
    practices.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit management principles, practices, and
    legal requirements.
  • Knowledge of sound financial management principles and
    practices.
  • A proven fundraising track record in the nonprofit sector,
    including success in securing funds from major donors and other
    sources.
  • Experience with and skill in working with a Board of
    Directors.
  • An understanding of the conditions and challenges in urban and
    rural areas of deep need in South Africa or other developing
    countries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both groups and
    one-on-one situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Availability to work flexible hours occasionally and to travel
    to New York City as needed for meetings with donors or the board or
    for events and South Africa on occasion.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The director is expected to work an average of 30 hours per
week. The salary range for the part-time position is $63,750 –
$75,000 annually, with an additional $450 per month in lieu of
health insurance. The position may increase to full time in the
future if funds become available.
