The Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich–Berlin (IfZ) invites applications for the

Position of the Director (f/m/d)

commencing 1 October 2025.

The position is to be filled in the form of a joint appointment to a (permanent) full professorship (W3) in Modern History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich with a reduced teaching load (2 SWS). The director is usually appointed for a period of five years. Reappointment is possible, as is the change to a permanent position.

The search is carried out jointly by the IfZ and LMU Munich.

The IfZ’s research field, as stipulated in its statute, is all of Germany’s 20th century history up to the present, while also considering its European and global dimensions. We are looking for an outstanding scholar with a proven track record of research in key periods of contemporary history. Furthermore, relevant organisational and management experience is required; experience in non-university research institutions is desirable.

LMU Munich and the IfZ are equal opportunity employers. Both continue to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and both strongly encourage applications from female candidates. LMU Munich and IfZ intend to enhance the diversity of its members.

Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

Please submit your application (comprising a curriculum vitae, documentation of academic degrees and certificates as well as a list of publications, evidence of teaching experience and third-party funding) in electronic form both to the deputy director of the IfZ, Prof. Dr. Magnus Brechtken, Leonrodstr. 46b, 80636 München (bewerbung-direktion(at)ifz-muenchen.de ), and the Dean of the Faculty of History and the Arts, Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, D-80539 Munich, Germany, no later than 29 February 2024 (date of receipt): https://www.efv.verwaltung.uni-muenchen.de/w3ngifz (registration required).

To help us track our recruitment effort, please indicate in your cover/motivation letter where (tendersglobal.net) you saw this job posting.
