Director, Major Gifts & Individual Giving

Position Summary

The Director, Major Gifts & Individual Giving is responsible
for raising $14M+ annually from individual donors, overseeing the
Membership, Patron, Major Gift, and Planned Giving programs of the
department. The Director manages a portfolio of leading supporters
and is responsible for implementing a strategic pipeline to
identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from individual
donors. They are a key player in a dynamic Development department
charged with ensuring the ongoing success of NYCB’s mission and
programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 individual high-impact donors
    and prospects, serving as primary liaison for their engagement with
    the Company
  • Develop, execute, and manage NYCB’s individual giving efforts,
    leading to the successful solicitation and stewardship of donors to
    the Major Gift, Planned Giving, Patron, Young Patrons Circle, and
    Membership programs
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive contributed revenue
    strategy to identify and secure renewed, increased, and new
    donations
  • Oversee multi-year strategy to advance Major Gift and Planned
    Giving programs, ensuring sustainable funding of Company operations
    and special programs
  • Supervise a staff of 10 full-time, part-time, and seasonal
    employees, and act as primary advocate for their involvement in and
    perspective of cross-departmental and Company-wide initiatives
  • Strategize mid- and long-term fundraising opportunities with
    the Senior Director of Development, Executive Director, and Board
    of Directors Development Committee
  • Collaborate with Senior Director of Development and fellow
    Directors to develop and implement special funding projects and
    multi-year campaigns
  • Develop and execute stewardship plans to expand relationships
    with Patron, Young Patrons Circle, and Membership donors and
    prospects
  • Oversee all solicitation and stewardship materials for
    Individual Giving programs, including letters, proposals, and
    donation reports
  • Work with peers in the Development department to manage and
    staff cultivation events; coordinate on cross-departmental projects
    including crediting, donor communications, and preparation of
    fundraising reports as needed
  • Work closely with the Finance, Education, and Operations
    departments to create and manage fundraising budgets and
    proposals
  • Manage the Company’s annual telemarketing fundraising campaigns
    with SD&A
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Senior Director of
    Development

Manages a staff to help:

  • Develop and oversee all communications with individual donors
    and prospects
  • Draft acknowledgement letters and correspondence for Executive
    Director, Senior Director of Development, Artistic Director, and
    Associate Artistic Director
  • Ensure timely and accurate gift processing, tracking,
    acknowledgement, and documentation
  • Guide Individual Giving prospect research needs and priorities,
    and supervise effective prospect management
  • Oversee all Individual Giving cultivation and stewardship
    events
  • Create and supervise Individual Giving expense budget and
    revenue projections
  • Oversee the timely fulfillment of donor benefits
  • Ensure appropriate donor recognition
  • Work with HR department to secure staffing of events from NYCB
    volunteers
  • Manage NYCB’s relationship with CSC Global to maintain required
    state solicitation registrations and revenue report filings

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated record of soliciting and securing six- to
    seven-figure gifts from high-impact donors and prospects
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines and multiple projects
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in fundraising
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently lead a team of development
    professionals
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues across
    all Company departments, and advocate for Individual Giving efforts
    and priorities
  • Discretion and good judgment with the best interests of the
    organization as the top priority
  • Experience writing grant proposals and reports
  • Commitment to NYCB’s success and mission
  • Experience working with Tessitura or related donor/constituent
    database preferred

    frequently exposed to:
    • Office setting
    • Theater and studio settings
    • Offsite meetings

that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the minimum
requirements of this position:

  • Position regularly requires sitting and standing for long
    periods of time.

 Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt position and the hours of work are
between 10am – 6pm weekdays.  Position requires the ability to
participate in donor events and attend performances, including some
evenings and weekends. Minimal travel may be required as
needed.
